Better to at least write what and how alongside, and if there's a mistake someone corrects it, rather than those who just post pics and let other laymen guess which mountain is shown. Not all are "at home" in the mountains to know everything by heart.

@misk, nice pics

...details - every tour consists of them! For successful tour execution and safe return, details must each be in its place. Guessed, wrongly transferred, corrected the error... - that's not GUARANTEE for success! With published report we unintentionally offer idea!? What then if offered details not WINNING COMBINATION? Will someone take responsibility?! pic 8: taken from Jezerca above Loški žleb, foreground Morež, right Bricelj, back from fog peeks Stol above Breginj..... no trace of Bavški Grintavec! So if you don't know, better not... Nice mountaineering greeting and happy TRAIL!

I think everyone is responsible for themselves. If someone decides for a tour, just looking at the report and pics published here is not enough. At least for myself I know that without proper info on terrain, weather conditions and after checking maps and guidebooks I don't go on serious tours.

@misk, nice pics.... to other pros, thanks for explanation where what is.
And good luck!

panoramik: "At least for myself I know that without proper information on the terrain, weather conditions, and after checking maps and guides I don't go on serious tours." Here is the essence of everything! Some want everything served on a platter: or do you print out pictures to know where you walk or what??? But the typical question in the winter season still wins (think we're near no. 50 zmeden) whether I need winter gear for the ascent... we won't even speak of other stupidities. Accusing and whining is anyway the Slovenian national sport! Pathetic!
Everyone is responsible for themselves! So that at the end a wrongly captioned picture isn't blamed that someone had to bivouac somewhere! You're not serious!jezen

Not one asked about the actual conditions on the path to Jalovec.

Nothing about conditions on the path ...

New friend, good connoisseur of views, Mr. Ulrich I asked if he would draw me a piece of stylized panorama from Jalovec. I showed him the controversial eighth Misk photo and explained the dilemma. This is what came out. As you can see, the friendly panoramist voluntarily painted shaded outlines of mountains and assigned names to some. He probably didn't make a mistake in this case, although he sometimes does, because he hasn't been hiking our mountains for long. He's also just learning our language, so diacritics and declensions give him trouble, here and there he even borrows a name from our neighbors. Overall he's quite good, I think even Pernhart's Marko would happily redraw something from him if they were contemporaries. mežikanje

...Well, people, why argue so much. I think Juš is the most experienced among us all and I think (at least in my opinion) his opinion counts. All who like hiking in mountains in winter, we must first clear some things with ourselves. Info about paths is available somewhere, that's why this forum is here, send PM to someone who was there and get first-hand info. But that's the least important. We must set goals so high that we are physically and mentally up to the tour. And equipment; everyone knows GO TO MOUNTAINS ONLY WITH COMPLETE EQUIPMENT!velik nasmehvelik nasmeh Here there is no "do I need this or that....". Sometimes even our home hill can be a problem in winter conditions, as conditions can change quickly.eekeekWe must know that there are guidebooks for all paths available in every library today, just have to go there.
And some course on snow conditions in mountains and movement is not superfluous, as you learn a lot there, and even if a person knows something, he never knows enough not to learn something new. Otherwise full respect to Juš for his ascents and descriptions, because if you know how to read or if you know what to look for in such posts then info is on the palm. Sometimes you just have to put one foot in front of the other and check on the spot how and what. No hard feelings everyone. Safe steps forward to all who hike or otherwise admire our beauties in winter time.nasmehnasmeh

Today a dog - Husky climbed to the top of Jalovec, but then couldn't make it down. The owner Austrian waited for him first at the saddle and then at the hut. Does anyone know how it ended?
As for conditions, the summit is very icy.

Jalovec from Tamar is a nice ascent, but the real challenge is nevertheless the ascent from Loška Koritnica. Not too early I drive to Loška Koritnica. I park at the "iron bridge", because further it just doesn't go. With all necessary equipment I step along the road to the last houses, then straight along the "gully" to the large snow slide at the end of the "ice field". I use the "hunter's" passage "Čez štenge" and try the gully, where soon a large boulder not covered by snow stops me. Nothing is left but to descend some 10 meters back down and go to the marked path leading to the saddle Brežice. The path is of course snowy, only some wire ropes stick out of the snow, quite some caution is needed, as the path is quite exposed even in summer, now even more so. When I reach up among the trees I turn left and cross the snowfields until I reach the "ice field" again and go up it. Since it's more or less wind-packed everywhere I hardly sink in and progress quickly. Well, in some gully a frozen rock step appears. With my ice axes no chance over there, so I choose the passage far right. Higher I reach wide snowfields, and also dense fog. Since I know this side of the mountain quite well, I manage without much trouble to hit the foot of Loški žleb. That I'm in the right place is also confirmed by the numerous footprints of colleagues from Tuesday, when rescue took place there. I ascend the gully and soon stumble upon skis that rescuers didn't have time to pick up. I continue towards the top of Loški žleb, using steps made by Iztok and Saško on descent (from the latter I also get info about good conditions in the gully), of course they are hard, the ice axes bite well and soon I'm at Jezerca. Light breeze, occasionally even sun shows, so I don't hesitate much and continue to Jalovec. Soon on the track, which is nice, hard, a real pleasure on ascent. At the narrow passage through the rocky part it's partially icy for some meters, but nothing special, further good steps all the way to the ridge, where SW wind blows quite strongly. The track is nice, not icy at all, only the wind on the ridge is sometimes a bit annoying. The closer to the top, the more the sky opens up, for a moment I glimpse Mangart, Triglav, Italian Western Julian Alps. At the top I step to the south side, where there is shelter, sit a bit, then back down to Jezerca and descent into Loški žleb. When I reach the skis I strap them to the backpack, that's why I came up too, to return them to the owners. Descent goes nicely, somewhat carefully cross the steep part by the icefall, well the passage on the marked path is a bit more annoying, "Čez štenge" nothing special, as it's the most comfortable winter passage, which I use several times even without snow. Follows descent to the "iron bridge". Only for good connoisseurs. I followed the dog, didn't see it, so probably already home. Met no one, only two chamois.

I'm planning to go up on Saturday. Conditions should be ideal. In the glacier I'm always afraid of flying stone projectiles, but then at least during the approach in a quite cold morning they should still remain still.

Unfortunately the conditions weren't ideal, so my colleague and I were the only ones on Jalovec today. All other traffic turned towards Kotovo sedlo. (Of course with skis)

It would be good to know what was so not ideal, or maybe even dangerous. As for Kotovo sedlo, of course there were many with skis, as it was the double ski touring descent organized by GRS Rateče.

Lijaneja: Very nice presentation of the peaks in the photos. Since I rarely go to the Julijce, your explanation was very useful. What is non-ideal for some and what is ideal? For some everything is ideal (summer and winter), right Igor? Let us also have a bit of "our" comments, since we also leave yours to you. nasmeh
