Mali and Veliki Snežnik

Road from Sviščaki to Mašun and further to Snežnik castle (thank god!) is not paved and it's good if it stays that way. End of winter? The mentioned road at least to Mašun isn't plowed in winter... In Grda draga and further there might be some "strong" surprise... Don't know what signposts you mean, there are quite a few hiking ones...

As B2 mentioned, thank god this road isn't paved yet. For me and I believe for many nature lovers, this road is very nice as it is... a bit reminds me of a mix of mountain and wilderness highway - asphalt would ruin it badly, we know what happens around new pavings, especially traffic would increase. If anything, it would be more sensible to pave Il. Bistrica - Sviščaki.
There was talk of recategorizing the Sviščaki - Kozarišče road (Ilirska Bistrica part) from state regional to municipal local.
In practice that means the road would rise a few spots on the municipal road maintenance priority list (of course depends on mayor to mayor) compared to current state maintenance priority.
It also means macadam stays, which should be better maintained and some new scarp, especially many needed retaining walls would be built.
New regional would go via Knežak - Koritnice - Mašun - junction with existing mentioned regional.
But as mentioned, it was just talk...zavijanje z očmi

Signposts from Loška side are basically enough not to get lost. Newly (seems to me since last year) about 200m asphalted through Sviščaki so dust doesn't rise between houses, the rest will stay (hope forever) unpaved.

Road from Loška valley drivable to Gašper and further to hunting hut. Path to Snežnik dry and nicely dry.
From Sviščaki you can get by car to road for Grda draga. Further still snow. These are today's conditions.

Today really nice visibility to Alps, Dolomites, Cres...
Started in Sviščaki and continued through forest on footpath, which is dry. On path couple tens of meters scree and below summit too. Gaiters not needed. On summit heard banging from Poček training ground, probably howitzers of Slovenian army. mežikanje Returned on macadam road, which is also completely dry.
Oh, one more. Watch out, sun burns, but for now you'll just have red noses and cheeks velik nasmeh

Yesterday's day was for Snežnik. We started the hike at house in Sviščaki. At path start very interesting settlement with cottages. Before summit still some snow and since strong wind blowing there was crowd in hut. View reached to Triglav and Kamnik-Savinja Alps and other side to Reka and bay. We returned on path over Mali Snežnik, which was also mostly very windy, and on forest road to Sviščaki. On this path met no one. From Sviščaki on quite drivable forest road, not much used, drove to Snežnik castle and looked at it.
Sun despite April really already quite burns. Nice regardsnasmeh

On Saturday 30.4 with my colleague we visited Snežnik. We started from Sviščaki. The weather was quite okay at the beginning, sometimes the sun showed up.. the higher we went towards the summit, the worse the weather was. The path was dry, not muddy at all. On the summit there was a sleet shower. The summit was in fog, no views that day. The return path was not friendly at all, muddy, slippery like hell, especially on rocks. Lower down it was nice. There were quite a few visitors. Next time I visit Snežnik, I'll make sure it's a nice sunny daynasmeh Best regards

This weekend, 18th and 19th June, the hut on Snežnik will be closed due to a death in the family.

Thanks for understanding.

Tisa, that one can meet "forest honey lovers" in the Snežnik forests, these shots prove it. Taken from the car last week on the road from Sviščaki towards Mašun. Bear with three cubs.

Iskalec, all congratulations for the excellent photos. You were at the right time in the right place. This proves that we really have to be careful when venturing into Snežnik forests, especially if we spot cubs. Regards

Fear of bears is unjustified. I've played with cubs myself many times.

That you played with bear cubs? Were they plush?velik nasmeh Bears usually retreat from people, but if it's a female with small ones, it can be quite dangerous, which is generally known. Otherwise fear of any beast is quite justified, after all even if the animal is practically from birth with people, fully domesticated, there can come a moment when......

On Sunday I was up there. Foggy and windy, view only from memory. Path slippery and greasy. But I met a civilian honey lover. Not just a lover, also a producer.nasmeh On the way home on the road towards Mašun I met a whole herd of white-tailed ungulates similar to roe deer.
