Yesterday eventful day. On Gorenjska in the morning really damn cold, so we went by nose looking for warm coastal weather...well, at least that's what we hoped at first . This Snežnik was planned for some time. In old hiking booklet I recently noticed I already have a stamp from this coastal Triglav-haha, date 29.5.1993 . So I said, what if we really go up this year, after good 19 years. OK, let's rather go to Snežnik than somewhere over 2000m . Since of course we didn't check on the portal before departure how the route to starting point goes, finding it was real adventure ...and fun . We laughed a bit at my reading and writing mistakes. Haha. Sv. Ahac suddenly renamed to SVAHAC . Oh oh. Whatever, laughter on this topic still plenty today. Just one of yesterday's adventures that spiced up our way . We parked of course down at big parking lot. Thinking that, at least by number of steel horses, not too much visit, we slowly ascended on nice gravel path. Alone...surprisingly. Later there were some cars at each parking. OK, no crowd anyway. Well yeah, there was. How not, since conditions like yesterday didn't allow lounging in front of hut . Moderate ascent and gaining height probably opens views in right weather....this time no sign of them :-o :-|. I observe hikers...all dressed in anoraks and windbreakers . Somewhere at those trees look up doesn't promise much. Can't see hut or summit . But I notice path winding between pines. I stop just to strap backpack with two pieces of firewood-so I do some good deed . Really nice feeling in the heart . And quite a few hikers who, like us, hurry to hut to refuel and of course warm up. To summit still about half hour nice moderate walk. Few times I almost stumble badly, as wind almost moves me and badly freezes . Suddenly I notice signs that I'm almost at top. Yay . At hut entrance though...crowd. But some space for us found. Nice, although strongly windy outside. So in unchanged conditions after about 45min we returned to valley. Not very pleasant wind clearly told us we're on coast and bora is home here . Well yeah, this also has its own charm which we Gorenjci not used to. Snežnik looks beautiful and wonderful mountain offering divine views far around. Hope next time I'll get to see them. So probably return sometime .

Hribovc88! You'll solve your question most easily yourself. Calculate how much time you need to walk 19km from Ilirska Bistrica to Sviščaki and add the official 2 hours to the summit. You can check the data in the Guide to Slovenian mountain huts. And lots of fun with the calculating. Sometimes, when we were still tied to public transport (timetables), such feats were two-day. Oh, and don't forget the time for the return too.

14 hours and 30 minutes, that's quite a bite... Thanks julius But maybe some local drives up to Sviščaki?

I think no one drives, because between Ilirska Bistrica and Sviščaki there are no villages or hamlets. Best regards.

Yeah, nothing then, just feet on the path, no other way

You'd surely get a hitchhike, because that road from IB up is quite busy. But probably not everyone goes exactly to Sviščaki, don't know, not a local. Easily you can walk to Volovje Reber, from there practically equally good views

Aha that's where wind turbines will stand someday... , so how long from Ilirska Bistrica to Volovje Reber?

By car to the starting point 15 min, on foot e.g. 3 hours...guessing, haven't gone on foot yet. Up there you can roam half hour or half day..very extensive area.

Hribovc88! If heading to Volovjo reber, I warmly recommend also viewing Milanije. Don't forget headlamp to see Italian fortifications built when they thought only with army help they keep our land theirs. Then they didn't know we were ready to sell for half lira.

5 hours to Sviščaki past Kozlek on E6, if via Milanje (locals call notorious Volovji rebri), add at least one more hour, if not two, as it's very nice and time flies. To top of Velike Milanje from Il. Bistrica about 2h to 2.5h. Use Geopedija: http://www.geopedia.si/#T184_L696_F89_x448520_y47244_s13_b5

Caretakers at Koča Draga Karolina on Snežnik inform all fans and potential visitors of Snežnik that the hut is closed whole November, regardless of weather. Thanks for understanding and nice mountaineering greetings! Janja and Slavko

Maybe someone knows how it looks with snow above the tree line? I'd like to ski the Lož side, but I'm afraid bushes stick out too much, especially now after the thaw... Thanks
