@ jedriličar Hello, today at 18h I called the hut at Sviščaki (051/219-799 - call them for road condition) and they say the caretaker is going up tonight to Draga Karolina hut at Big Snežnik. So, hut should be open for weekend. Also worth mentioning the full moon hike on ju3 (Saturday) evening to Snežnik.. as they told me at Sviščaki. Good luck!

today I was on Snežnik, road is plowed, weather great, conditions top-notch. Only on top wind was strong over 80km/h.

Yesterday I went far, far from my home, to Snežnik because our EXCELLENT forecasters promised sun only in the south of the country. But when going up I could see only 5m ahead. Pure fog and nothing else. While sun was shining on hills near my home. SUPER!

It was really great .... road to Sviščaki normally drivable, somewhat narrow for passing in places, otherwise ok Couple pics from yesterday

Probably nice everywhere today. Just had to stick nose out. We chose Snežnik, no regrets. But not only us, looooots chose it and all sorts seen. From full ski field with competition, to walkers, ski tourers, snowboarders, snowshoes more carried than walked. Path trampled and well packed (both from Sviščaki), views eye candy from Julian Alps to Kvarner, hut open and friendly, plenty snow. Bit lower snowdrops blooming. After yesterday's Gorenjska, today Primorska dialect and friendly locals. Ivan and Darinka, nice meeting you!

One more, if someone among readers lost a white card size of credit card, with silver sticker saying Brest and some numbers on bottom edge, let them contact zs. Found below summit.

Maybe someone knows what conditions are like? Snowshoes not needed? Any other peculiarity?

I'd also like to ask for some info on the conditions, if anyone is going up tomorrow, because some of us are planning to go on Sunday with skis and boards thanks best

Road to Sviščaki nicely packed. Trail trodden, but not pitted. Snow soft and dry, except below summit where windblown and a bit icy. Lots of us: walkers, snowshoers and skiers. Nice day!

If anyone found a Black Diamond trekking pole below Veliki Snežnik summit, I'd appreciate it. Lost it Saturday 23.3. during a slip that luckily ended well.

Hello zvone1. I witnessed your slip. It looked awful, hope you're OK. Too foggy to find anything even if I went to search right away. Need to wait for the weather to calm a bit, then go back to check. Good luck ahead.

It was really awful. How it must have looked to the "spectators". Without the section of unfrozen snow in between, it would probably have ended differently, as I would have just slid further. That's how I stopped. Otherwise, I already bought new poles on Saturday. But those have some symbolic value. Searching for them or whatever makes no sense, as they won't be findable even in thawed ground. Good luck to you too!

Can't comment on the incident, as it happened after our group's descent. Conditions were very demanding. Our group reached the summit with crampons and descended safely and without issues.

I had all the necessary gear too. But nature was stronger. The key is that the end was good. Good luck!

These were the conditions at the time of the slip. Besides very poor visibility, a strong wind was blowing. The last section below the hut was pure ice, so some turned back.

We were early in the morning sun all the way through the forest and were already returning when the next ones were arriving at the top. In such ice better on the ridge, where there is compact wind-packed snow and less slippery to the top. That was also my advice on the return to those we spoke with. Safe steps to everyone wherever and good luck.

zvone1, the caretaker Slavko from Koča na Snežniku just called me and told me that on descent Sunday they noticed that pole part at the spot I marked on the borrowed picture. He says conditions were too harsh to pick it up, but he assessed it won't be hard to find and it will wait for you in the hut on top or in Pl. house at Sviščakih. He also reports the hut will be closed next weekend.
