I'm curious how the snow is on Snežnik. At what height it starts, how much towards the top and so on.

There's really little snow for Snežnik... A bit of ice on the path from Sviščaki, so small crampons come in handy.. further nice track or some deeper frozen footprints... checked yesterday..

Road from Lož to Sviščaki impassable 5km before Sviščaki due to snow. To Sviščaki best from Ilirska Bistrica or park 5km before and continue on foot. If no shovel, don't try unplowed snow patch. Won't go... checked nasmeh
PS: Thanks again good passersby who helped dig car out. Alone never get out.

Where is this? Before Leskova dolina, after, or?
Thanks for clarification.

If you're going from Loška dolina towards Mašun (that is, past Leskova dolina), there's a turn-off for Sviščaki 2km before Mašun, then the road (currently!) is drivable for another 5km or so (up to about 2-3km before Grda Draga). The Mašun-Sviščaki road is officially closed in winter time and they don't plow it until May 1st (of course snow usually melts earlier!). For all who want to go to Snežnik from Sviščaki I recommend access to Sviščaki from Ilirska Bistrica, the road there is regularly plowed!

For Leskovo dolina.
You can see there are no tire tracks further on, only footprints. I think you can also see very clearly that someone got stuck and had trouble digging out nasmeh
I think this point is somewhere near the dot on the map. But apparently it's OK again further on.
The guy from Cerknica (who was the only one with a shovel and saved the day) nicely advised us: When the first snow falls, shovel in the car and don't take it out until spring..

Janice, don't worry, it was great training! We'll probably see each other on Snežnik in spring... nasmeh

Today under the summit of Little Snežnik I FOUND ČUTARO!

It's waiting for the owner at the Dom na Sviščakih.

Yesterday on Snežnik a gorgeous day. Branches decorated with ice lace, the sea illuminated by the sun shining under the cloud cover. At the top fluffy snow sculptures. At the end of the path gentle snowflakes caressed us. Really fairy-tale.

Does anyone know if the road to Sviščaki is drivable?

Maybe you could ask at the dom na Sviščakih
051/613-601 or 051/219-799 or info@sviscaki.com

@sla
And if you don't get an answer from the hut keeper at the Snežnik hut, there's another option; Planinski dom na Sviščakih.

The hut is open all year. Information: 050/613 601 and Hinko Poročnik, Rozmanova ulica 24e, 6250 Ilirska Bistrica, phone: 05/714 12 05.
The roads in this area are maintained by Komunala Ilirska Bistrica.

Enjoy, wherever you spend tomorrow.

The road is maintained by CP Koper, as it's a regional - i.e. state road and CPK has the concession.
In recent years they've been maintaining the road regularly, the problem arises if we get heavy snowfall also in the valley and in Brkini, where there are many villages and plowing is priority there, the road to Sviščaki in such case is just cleared so people can get down in emergency. That means for that day or two it's mostly one-way with stopping sections.
But the municipality and CPK are trying to keep the road adequately drivable at least on weekends and when the ski slope is operating.

The road was really well plowed on Saturday (as always when I visit). I asked because my companions were whining a bit.
And about the hike itself - soon fog enveloped us and we followed the wrong track. Then we found the right path, but didn't reach the top due to strong wind (and fog). The trip was still excellent!

Is the hut below Snežnik summit open? We'd go for the weekend ... and road condition to Sviščaki?
Thanks for info in advance
