marco, thanks! If the caretaker really finds the pole, it would be nice, as it served me well otherwise. I'll probably call him at the first opportunity, if I understood correctly, namely if he found it at all? And arrange where it will wait for me.

This weekend we'd go check Snežnik. Anyone have experiences from previous springs, what conditions to expect up there at 18 degrees in the valley? View obviously fantastic, ideally neither icy nor too wet (road probably no problem) Of course we'll check before going, just to know whether to prepare for Snežnik or consider another destination. Thanks

The road is passable. On Sunday it was a bit icy on the last couple of km, but on the return everything was already melting. Lots of snow, if hot it will loosen and you'll sink in, if you go early it will probably be cold enough for normal walking. The path is trampled to below the last ascent ... surely no problem. Regards

The hut was not open this weekend, next one probably will be, somewhere I saw tel. number here on forum, search and call. You can also call the house at Sviščakih ...

Sunday and Monday on Snežnik. From Sunday not much to write. The forecasted afternoon clearing was nowhere near Snežnik. Bora gusts probably at least to 100, as it suddenly moves you one meter. We descended to the south side toward skalca to the forest border. Snow hard and super for walking. Skiing fully OK, only visibility in very diffuse light a bit annoying, as some bump badly surprises you. Hoping for better weather we went again on Monday and the weather didn't disappoint this time. On the top still a bit of clouds and if we had waited a couple more minutes it would have cleared almost completely. We descended to Smrekova draga in NW direction - 400 elevation on hard snow that holds quite well. Then ascent ca. 100 elevation from the basin toward the winter path from Leskova dolina. From there fantastic view of the north slope of Snežnik. Then descent through the forest to Čaša and further to Leskova dolina. A few snapshots and views in the video on the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_rWL-BeCUM

Next weekend I have Snežnik planned, but given the snow depth I'm curious about the markings - are they visible? Since I'd go up for the first time and don't know the path, I hope it's at least trodden enough to follow or that the markings are at least above the snow... I plan a circular route Sviščaki - M. Snežnik - V. Snežnik - Sviščaki. Has anyone walked this path in the last few days? I hope the bears are still sleeping too...

The path to Snežnik is trodden. Orientationally the upper part can be a bit more demanding if there's really thick fog, otherwise these days the biggest obstacle will probably be softened snow.

Is the path trodden from both sides, also over Mali Snežnik?

I don't know about the footpath over Mali Snežnik to Grdo drago. I was once this winter on Mali Snežnik and when I was skiing to Grdo drago I met a couple of hikers who were breaking trail completely, so there might be some track, but definitely not even remotely as trodden as the Sviščaki-Veliki Snežnik section.

Usually in winter there is a trodden path along the ridge to M. Snežnik and down to the road, most often along the summer path markings. Currently conditions are such that on the ridge everything is blown clean, snow hard and frozen. In good visibility you can't get lost anywhere, when you descend from V. Snežnik along the ridge, instead of left down to Sviščaki (where you came from) you go naturally ahead to M. Snežnik and then naturally into the valley (summer markings visible on trees), a bit through the forest and you come out on the road that leads straight to Sviščaki (when you come out on the road, go left, not right). Expect that especially in the afternoon hours the snow in the forest will sink, and strongly, up to 1-2 meters. Regards and hope this description will be useful to you (you can also stop by the hut at Sviščakih before starting and look at the map).

Today on Snežnik it was almost summer-like. Path to Sviščaki dry. In the morning snow was still pleasant for walking. The track through the forest was nicely trodden and packed, higher up messed up by a larger group of skiers. According to reports, it was still frozen under the summit in the morning, upon my arrival around 11:00 it was still nicely compact. Within 1 hour the snow turned into slippery mush. Of all the gear I dragged with me, I used crampons for the upper part in both directions, on the return for the lower part through the forest snowshoes. More out of habit than necessity, as snowshoes on wet snow were flying and required extra caution. Locals were mostly equipped with chains, which sufficed for today. As appropriate for Sunday and weather, there were huge numbers of hikers and skiers. On the way home I stopped in the picturesque village of Prem, which I always admire when driving by. I viewed the nicely renovated castle and walked through the village to the church of St. Helena. From the village there are beautiful views over the entire Reka river valley, to Vremšica and Nanos, and from Snežnik to Učka.

Great trip @SuzanaM! I'll go up next weekend if the weather is good... But I'm curious if on picture 23 it's the ridge towards M. Snežnik and the junction of paths Mali - Veliki Snežnik? And how about that slope on picture 11? Can it be crossed without crampons, or can one reach the summit without them?

On picture 23 it's as you say. Crossing the slope on picture 11 wasn't problematic, as the track was well trodden. Otherwise it could be. Crampons weren't necessary mid-morning either, as the snow was already very soft. Since I had them with me, I put them on, as walking without slipping is less tiring. About current conditions, inquire with the hut keeper before departure.

Today despite the weather forecast to Snežnik. With a bit of courage a hit like the lottery! Weather fantastic, sun rays caressed us to the top, otherwise no noticeable wind. Snow southern but path well trodden, in short wonderful day!

Yesterday terrible bad weather was forecast for those parts, but that didn't deter us from visiting Snežnik. Luck favors the bold and ... Well, we rather count ourselves among the former. We managed up and down without rain, but it was very foggy, visibility at the top such that you almost ran into the hut before noticing it. The path is still about 90% snowy, snow wet and sinks deeply in places, so you can sink up to your butt. Nothing special otherwise, but I really recommend good footwear, otherwise you return to the start with proper puddles in your boots. Just one picture for illustration ... nothing much to photograph!

Hello, I'm interested in the road to Sviščaki. Is it passable without winter tires? Is there still any snow on the road? Thanks and best regards

The road is dry and passable with any vehicle without problems.
