Was up there today. -15 degrees + strong wind. Recommend snowshoes for walkers because lots of snow. Skiing solid.
Pics and video I'll post in next days.
Best, Matevž

On Snežnik 9.2. Started from Leskave valley on skis. At top very windy as Matevž said and quite cold. In winter hut prepared skis and climbed up a good 3 min to top. Descent from top due to wind quite careful, in forest enjoyment on powder to exit nasmeh LP Blaž

Snežnik these days calls from afar and invites with its snowy pearl appearance. To such a call or invitation one must respond and on Wednesday we piled into the car and went to Sviščake. From the top first descent north to Kolobarnica, back to the top and descent to the forest above Grčovec. Then ascent to smaller hill above turning point and ski through the forest to Sviščaki. Snow on the north side at the top slightly crusty, lower settled wet powder. On the south side already fully spring-like crusty. A perfect day nasmeh

On the top very icy due to rain, but the sun on the southern slope did its thing, so it was really nice skiing. Crampons recommended for the approach itself. One descent from the top wasn't enough for me, so I went twice from the top, the second run I skied all the way to Grčovec. From there along forest tracks back to the hiking path and to Sviščaki.

2 questions. Nice weather forecast for the weekend, so idea for Snežnik too.

1. question
Is the road to Sviščaki from Ilirska Bistrica accessible with summer tires (change was delayed big smile)

2. What's the path to the top like. Are crampons necessary?

Thanks

Probably one of the last chances this season for skiing on the southern slope of Snežnik. Before that, descent to the northern side into Smrekovo drago where conditions for skiing will last quite a while. The path is trodden, full of visitors, skiers and hikers. Snow is still continuous from Sviščaki to the top. The day was almost windless and spring sun nicely tanned the forehead in say 30 shades of red nasmeh

On Friday, 3.4.2015, beautiful day on Snežnik, where strong north wind created real winter feelings. The path from Sviščaki was nicely refreshed in the morning with cm of fresh snow, which started a few km earlier on the road. In the morning the path was very hard and frozen under fresh snow, in the afternoon mostly softened, wet and slippery. Below the top, microspikes were useful for less effort on the last steep part, but it went without them too, especially after some more hikers had trodden it. It should snow until tomorrow, so Snežnik will get a fresh blanket and new snow conditions again.

After the hike I enjoyed for quite a while the beautiful colors that warm spring sun painted in the valley, and walked around the clustered ridge village of Prem. At the end I drove to the other side of the valley to the picturesque Turn castle.
