Mali and Veliki Snežnik

Given that you're asking from where it's best to start for Snežnik, I assume you haven't been up there yet. Since you don't know the mountain, I advise you not to go up now, because there are two deep precipices along the path that are covered in snow and therefore dangerous. Go to Snežnik in summer, then repeat the tour next winter when you know the path.

In nice, sunny weather, even beginners can summit Snežnik in winter, as the path from Sviščaki is always well-visited and trodden, allowing an easy winter ascent, of course with proper footwear and crampons and necessary caution due to possible slips in the last part below the hut.

From Loška dolina it's a completely different story, as you have to start already from Leskova dolina, which is 9km or 1.5h - 2h extra walking away from the usual summer starting point, i.e. Gašperjev hrib, depending on conditions and individual fitness. From Gašperjev hrib to the summit at least another 1h of fast ascent. Currently the path is deeply snow-covered and you need to allow at least 6-7h for the tour plus drive to Leskova dolina.

Today there was a really nice ascent to Snežnik. The path was nicely trodden, snow didn't sink, crampons not needed.

Cultural program organized by Društvo mladih Bakla (http://www.drustvo-bakla.si/).

Hut was open. Lots of visitors!

/in a few days I'll send pictures too/

It was a real winter fairy tale. Until around 11 o'clock it was quite windy and mists were racing. Then the mist cleared and a real winter idyll emerged. You have to experience this, it can't be described.

In Leskova dolina there were already quite a few cars before our arrival, so we parked a bit lower. The track is nicely laid and it's a real pleasure to follow the predecessors. In the lower forest part there are a few cm of fresh powder on hard base, making the path very pleasant. Such conditions continue all the way to the tree line, where strong wind awaits us. Wind along the path makes snowdrifts, plays with nature,...Here we sped up a bit and soon we were below the upper ascent part, where there is hard and wind-blown snow, which doesn't cause problems on ascent. On the other side of the ridge a real beach, almost no wind and warm. We started descent from the summit to the north side and after a few dozen meters crossed towards M. Snežnik. In the middle of the ridge we continued the path/descent towards Gašperjev hrib or Leskova dolina. Upon entering the forest the joyful squealing began on the hard base sprinkled with powder, which allowed enjoyable skiing, in the lower part just a glide to the car, which we reached all too quickly. For Andrejjerina, or whoever knows:

you mention that the glide through the forest was enjoyable, so I'm curious how much snow there is in the forest from Leskova, or if it's sufficiently covered (rocks, branches,...).
Thanks in advance.

There is definitely enough snow for carefree zigzagging, rocks and branches are nicely covered, just avoid fallen trees. It mainly depends on whether you're on foot or skis, if on foot, use snowshoes, otherwise you'll sink too deep. LP Andrej

Today again on Snežnik. Weather sunny and without the annoying characteristic wind. Otherwise it's about time that at this often visited mountain I encounter nice weather.
We met lots of ski tourers, snowshoers and of course regular hikers.
Interestingly, there's no new snow on Snežnik. For the approach crampons are not needed for now

Yesterday with a friend we ascended Snežnik from Leskova dolina. We decided to try reaching summit via Gašperjev hrib. Since weather forecast not most favorable we were at start in Leskova dolina at 6.00. Since friend doesn't ski much we went on foot hoping snow wouldn't sink too deep. Indeed from start to good 2km we followed tracks of ski tourers and some snowshoer which were quite old. From second km tracks disappeared as predecessors went up Snežnik other path not via Gašperjev hrib like us. So had to blaze own trail. Trailblazing extremely tiring as ice crust on snow very thin mostly sinking to knees and even waist though we're lighter hikers. After 3h reached Gašperjev hrib where snow finally held weight somewhat no more sinking. Continued bit faster but dense fog appeared not hindering much. At 1700m conditions worsened visibility to 15m light snow strong wind from sea. Summit in 4h 30min then quick descent as conditions not rosy. Descent another 3h 30min in very wet snow as lower sirocco did its. Total over 22km tired but satisfied first this winter this ascent from Leskova dolina via Gašperjev hrib no one gone that way almost two months.
very poor visibility below the summit1

I don't know what happened but maybe those two went along forest track that branches off good two km and leaves path from Leskova dolina because we met no living soul except two roe deer. In Leskova dolina we were just before 14.30 and no one there.

Just for info.
It's spring and bears waking up. Today near Leskova dolina two bears bit tire on trailer of local game warden. And in our Loška dolina already quite a few bear tracks with cubs

Regarding bears, they haven't gone to sleep at all, as I've been tracking them all winter in our Notranjska.
Possible that they went ski touring over Kaliče.

I never said there are no bears, as we walked about a kilometer on the tracks of the brown shaggy one who wandered around here a day earlier. I just say we didn't see it then.
