On Tuesday I'd head to Stol if the weather is nice. I'm curious if the path to Valvasor is passable and what it's like further. Still lots of snow?

Today I was on Stol via the Žirovnik path. It's quite OK towards the summit, still lots of snow but not icy velik nasmeh

Today I went to Stol again, of course at night. Snow unlike Grintovec quite hard, held my weight. Below while getting ready I thought today it'll be ideal. No wind, full moon, stars, walking without light. Midway it started blowing, more and more. I quickly dressed and thought: too nice to be true. This wind really bothers me already nasmeh

. At the hut in the lee, quick change and put on all clothes I had with me. Backpack left at hut and with camera and ice axe to summit waiting and waiting... sunrise. Speechless.
Snow hard then, didn't sink, only on descent a bit after 7 it did (my weight nasmeh

)

Can't wait for Grega's pics! Post them asap! I hate the Moon myself but you gave me idea how or when to start going to mountains.

Yeah, seems at night and morning on Stol it pulls "orenk". Someone blown off already.
From where approx snow starts now? Asking for footwear choice. Winter in dry not great.

Ascent to Stol. At the hut the master was preparing everything for the bonfire… By road, through the forest to the scree without issues. At the bench snow starts for real, in late morning hours already quite 'south', trodden but still sinks. And so to the top. (I had crampons on for easier walking...). On top it was windy… But then all the nicer back to the valley. To the bench (maybe further…) you can run down the snowfield without problem (gaiters), then to the hut same path as up. Just before the hut (20m) met a viper; it crossed the road too fast to photo.

Thursday 6.5., afternoon after work. Decided for Stol despite quite poor weather forecast, but it wouldn't let me rest. Took all winter gear accordingly.

Start at Valvasor hut in nice weather, soon cloudy, fog started at first landslide remains ~250 m higher. To bench no snow, snow patches start above it, then they run out higher where scree spreads. Practically no old snow to Prešeren hut except two or three small ones, but new snow from ~1900 m, at hut around 10-15 cm. Didn't go to summit due to thick fog, strong wind and snowing, after short rest and snack in shelter turned towards valley. On descent weather calmed, fog cleared, wonderful evening views over Sava valley appeared. Descent path more demanding than ascent due to wet and muddy rocks and roots. After four hours up and down arrived at car in evening. Demanding and tiring tour, but therefore interesting, definitely not for inexperienced hikers and mountaineers in such conditions.

Above bench more old snow, but stable for walking.

Wednesday 19.5.2010. Decision for ascent to Stol fell already 14 days ago. I was waiting only for the weather, which was nice on Wednesday.
Ascent started at Valvasor and via Žirovniška path to Prešeren hut. Almost no snow, except on saddle between Stols. To the top of Stol I climbed without issues, but really caution needed due to snow.
Back via Zabreška path, which for now I advise against without winter gear, as you need to cross quite a few avalanche fields.
Valvasor hut was closed that day.

Today in the morning on Stol really friendly weather, only a few hikers. Up via Žirovniška, down Zabreška. Both paths already more or less dry, here and there snow patches, on saddle below summit a bit more, but nowhere an obstacle for normal crossing. A couple more days of warm weather, and no trace of snow anywhere on the path.

Also we two were up a little before noon. Up Žirovniška, down. On return slight drizzle, otherwise o.k. (now already much nicer)
Except 5 min snow before summit, walked all the time on dry ground.
Under Prižnica nicely blooming Avrikelj. (pics)
So Stol is quite suitable as a dry tour.

Yesterday 28.5.2010, we paragliders set off to Stol. There were 6 of us and one paraglider girl. Conditions very favorable. Wind 2m/s V-JV, path mostly dry, just little snow still in gully below summit, which can be fully avoided. When sun shone on slopes of Stol, we descended the slope.
