It was very nice on Stol today , despite occasional fog that hid the views. The best view was on Triglav, Košuta and to Austria. Some snow on the path causes no problems. For the descent I recommend the Zabreška path, because it is less steep, Prešernova hut opened today

Stol - from the east - conditions this weekend: For the starting point we took Tinčkova hut or Jagrske bajte at the end of the road in Završnica valley from Žirovnica. The road is OK for passenger cars, also the unmarked path uphill from Tinčkova hut, which runs left of Srednji vrh is fine, except in the upper part when the steepness sets in, before joining the so-called Lower path to Stol, where vegetation and bushes have overgrown a lot, so it gets lost locally. Both the Lower path (also quite overgrown) and the Upper path from saddle Šija to the scree below the eastern ridge of Stol would need marking supplements and refreshment, especially if you have hiked on the Austrian side of the border above Celovška hut, where they have already done this exemplary this year. Also the signs and directions for Vrtača from the saddle below Srednji vrh could be much better. I met a group of Croatian hikers from Koprivnica who had quite some trouble finding the right starting point. Otherwise, this path to Stol, except for two somewhat larger snow patches, is already completely dry and without peculiarities.

Today I was training on Stol from Završnica. Nice and tough run. Descent eased by snowfield in gully between the two Stols. Unfortunately not much left, as it ends at height somewhat below 2000m.

I was also on Stol on Monday and would ask you, Bojan (we met on Žirovnica plain), how many times a week or month you do such or similar tours and if you run the whole path, even the steepest sections of the path, and how much time it takes for ascent and descent now in dry conditions? I have no experience in mountain running and it seems extremely hard to run the whole course to me, I only run flat and not too steep terrain, the rest walking. Lp

Hi I already know who you are, because you're the only one I met on Stol on Monday. Yeah, this year my high alpine mountain running is more of a disaster. The biggest problem was the long period of bad weather, plus studies are taking a lot of my time right now. So this was actually my first high mountain run this year. Last year at this time there were already 10-15 such. Normally I run such runs once a week. For runs to Stol I always start at the lake. Last time I ran directly to Veliki Stol and it took (disastrously) 1h 29 min. Until now I always ran first to Mali Stol and then to Veliki. In that case my record is 1h 25 min or 1h 18 min to Mali Stol. Intermediate times were 25 min to Valvasorjev dom and 50 min to Prižnica. As for the style, the better prepared I am, the more I can run. To Valvasorjev dom it's runnable all the way. Further on, some sections below Prižnica are such that you have to go on all fours and running is impossible. But if I'm okay I mostly run all the time. On Monday I was overtired and I wasn't getting anywhere. So I did the harder sections with fast walking. The training didn't go too well. Downhill I mostly walk because of ankle problems. Usually descent takes me 2-3 hours. Some of my blogs about running to Stol: * Stol + Ajdna: http://alturl.com/k8o9 *Run to Stol and Vrtača (mountain running): http://alturl.com/sbg6

Hi Bojan, thanks a lot for the detailed answer. I was curious about the times for such or a similar run, so that I have a comparison when I try something similar myself. I run 30-minute runs 3x a week (Straža Bled). From Valvasor to Mali Stol I took 1h08min. The descent took me 45 minutes, but I also slowly avoid downhill running (because of painful knee I paused for a good month). Your "catastrophic" times are really good times. If anything else interests me about running I'll ask you on the "mountain running" forum! Lots of good running! Greetings!

Yesterday (25 June) we headed from Trata (Johannsenruhe) via the climbing path to Stol. The path wasn't meant for us, as there was a warning before the junction that the path is closed. So we continued to Celovška koča and over the Belščica saddle to the top. Stol was a very visited mountain yesterday. Just on the ridge towards Prešeren hut (from Valvasor direction) I counted (in a line) over 60 hikers. Well, on the path from Celovška koča we met only a few hikers (Austrians didn't have a holiday yesterday)

See, that's because you don't read the notices...

My girlfriend and I were on Stol on Thursday (24.6.) and we went up Zabreška gora, down Žirovnica. On the way we met only one hiker, so no crowd at all Except at Prešeren hut there were half a dozen

michael66 maybe we met... But how nicely everything is marked in Austria: notice about closed climbing path first already at the road junction to Bärental, then again when macadam starts, then at parking at the barrier, then at the path branching from main road to climbing path and also in Celovška koča. Austrians of course made sure hikers from our side are informed too so notice in Prešeren hut and at the summit itself. With this I don't mean to criticize our PD, I know everything is voluntary including key services like GRS while in Austria everything professional and state-funded because the state is aware of importance for tourism. And that's the key problem!

A bit about greeting. I'm not a nationalist but still I greeted and responded even on Austrian side strictly in Slovenian. Among German speakers I mostly didn't notice any grudge, some even responded in Slovenian with characteristic Carinthian accent. The funniest were two Slovenians who greeted me with Guten tag! Almost no one greets you like that until Munich and a bit beyond. Practically we never hear that in the mountains. Always only Grüsgot, Servus, Halo (especially younger),... Also the bartender in Celovška koča didn't mind when I ordered beer in Slovenian,...

The notice that the climbing path to Stol is closed has been on hribi.net for some time. I personally like going to Celovška koča and peaks around there a lot. I always greet in Slovenian and practically always get back a Slovenian greeting, of course with emphasized rrr. Similar in Western Julian Alps. Because our compatriots live there. I've been to several huts where the caretakers also spoke Slovenian.

VanSims. Maybe we did meet, since there were only a few of us on the Austrian side. Yes, Austrians have really well-marked paths, but what when it's only in German. Well, anyway we figured out something was wrong with the path, confirmed also by a Slovenian couple who passed by. But in Slovenian it's written that the path is closed at the top of Stol. I hope that Slovene with guten Tag wasn't that big one with glasses

Girls and boys, don't make problems about who greeted how or from which country they were... What's important is that we are mountain lovers and that we don't bring politics to the mountains but desire for nature and its beauties...

Last extended weekend my friend and I used for a 3-day hike in Karavanke. For warming up we started from Ljubelj towards Preval; from there to Roblek, from Roblek to Zelenica. From Zelenica directly to Stol first very nice path, but towards end gets more demanding (and end not in sight)... Anyway towards evening with a family from Styria we arrived at Prešeren hut. View towards Bled took breath, really very nice, though windy and quite cold. In the hut they took good care of us and in the morning we headed to Golica. In the afternoon we arrived at hut below Golica and found out to Dovje still 6 hours!!! So we took "free afternoon" and only next day continued. Path from Golica to Dovje partly poorly marked, otherwise nice and not too strenuous. After conquering Dovška Baba, we started descending to valley (poor marks!!!). At Dovje we paid homage to Great Slovene, Jakob Aljaž. Let me mention that most of the path we did is named after him. We spent 3 wonderful days, gaze always stopping at "Zlatorog Kingdom", our next goal. Nice mountaineer's greeting!!!
