Does anyone have info on current conditions on Stol or paths to Stol from Valvasorjev dom? Are crampons necessary? Thanks for replies?

Given the thaw and the forecast temps ahead, crampons won't be needed at all...

Šerpa, it's an individual's thing if someone takes crampons or not. I think it's clear that I wrote that it applies to me, you can advise him though. I wrote in passing because I saw the Stol topic and since I'm heading to Stol myself, I wrote I won't take crampons. As I said, you can advise him and he'll figure out at the end if he needed crampons or not. That's why there are such forums.

Well, yeah, as klm says, if you follow the weather you already know when crampons are needed and when not

It costs nothing if you have them always in your backpack!

I join your opinion "geolog79", because I just wouldn't blindly trust my life to our meteorologists

I'm speaking for myself now, so no one misunderstands again. Once I went to Stol, there was snow up to my waist, still without crampons I got through the snow with no problems, you gotta be a little careful, lift legs over shoulders, but I don't see how crampons can help here (rather snowshoes), because my opinion is that on Stol there's really no such slip risk that you'd fall somewhere, or is there? Maybe I'm wrong, what do you say? Geolog, I see you're a strong advocate of crampons

Once we went to Stol from somewhere around Zabreška planina east towards the hut on Stol, I was really sorry because I didn't have crampons....

Regardless of approaching conditions or expected state at the end of the week, it's better for safety to have crampons with you (if frozen ground; i.e. earth and grass), than not (for such conditions Veriga Lesce are good; no ad). Geolog rightfully advocates them, even on seemingly easy Stol you can fly off so that you shit yourself, laughing no for sure. Mainly there are some quite treacherous traverses.

Weather forecasters said it snowed up to 2000 meters, so above that altitude there is quite a lot of snow.

The necessity of using crampons is de facto decided by each individual when they find themselves at such a place or spot that requires consideration of their use, provided that if they have them in the backpack they can use them, if not they will be in big trouble - from the valley you can't see up. When someone asks generally in the current weather conditions whether crampons are necessary above 2000 meters, it can be: -a reflection of their lack of knowledge of winter conditions or excessive carelessness, -lack of finances or something similar to get them, -or laziness because they don't want to carry them. Advice that they are not needed, I can calmly label as stupidity, because it is totally contrary to everything I have heard and read about safety in the mountains to date. I understand that everyone can decide for themselves about use, but DON'T ADVISE stupidity!!!

Simple answer when crampons and ice axe needed (answer not from my garden): in snow crampons and ice axe always needed, except when not

It's not that I'm a huge advocate of crampons, but of safe movement in the mountains. I had a very bad experience that put me on solid ground, a moment between being and not being. Let's see, crampons weigh 1.5 kg (if they do), ice axe weighs less than a kilo. And don't tell me every gram counts, because that's one big BS! So, does it cost us anything to have them with us? I think not, but when you need them and don't have them, it's one big s**t! If you don't have winter gear (and of course know how to use it) you have no business in the mountains in winter! Sorry, but that's my opinion. Because once you "fly off" it's too late... And be smart

No, yeah you got a point on one side :/ I for myself know what I'll take with me, but the guy who asked if crampons use is mandatory I think hasn't got a concrete answer yet. So should he take them or not? While at it, anyone maybe going Friday via Ajdna to Stol just for info?

You don't go to Stol in winter without crampons, Stol can sometimes be icy and dangerous, despite the seemingly easy summit.

The use of crampons (depending on conditions) is usually decided on site, definitely not based on what the forecasters said. So yes, definitely take crampons and ice axe. It's still better to have them and not use them, than to need them and not have them. In the first case you have nothing to fear, in the second things can get a bit complicated for you. Some concrete answers can also be found in these books: Dangers in the Mountains (Pit Schubert) and Memories and Warnings of the Mountains (Franci Malešič). Maybe morbid for some, definitely useful reading. Good luck!
