Me too, when I went by, I was amazed at the huge firewood chunks. And up top a sign to carry 'em up? I quickly wondered and passed by.

Mate007, you'd spike five on your back hump then carry 'em, dusty talent. Smart on paper!

Yeah if the hut warden wasn't offended and cheeky, maybe I'd even think of hauling some up...

I'd like to ask what the path to Stol from VALVAZOR is like, any snow? Can you get a stamp for Aljaž path at Prešeren hut.

The path is, as I wrote Thursday, about 2/3 snowy, i.e. you walk on bare ground less than an hour. Follows windblown snow that sinks a bit, towards top fairly hard so you walk nicely on top (if you go through the valley between both Stols; there probably most suitable (up-down)). How much snow? Up to approx. 1/2 meter. Re stamp Aljažev at Valvazor, don't know. Know only hut closed weekdays. Hike to Stol these last nice weather days, highly recommend! Good luck, heinz!

22.11. - nice weather, phenomenal Saturday trip, noticeable from crowd on path and esp. Stol summit. Attaching some pics.

@Bizy Refrain from such comments elsewhere. This forum is very good for us hill climbers.

Nice weather, nice path well trodden. Upper part between Stols crampons recommended, over Little Stol to hut without them no go. Lp

On Saturday excellent weather forecast for the high mountains, had to take advantage of it. Stol offered hospitality, from Žirovnica via Valvazor (hut open) along the Žirovnica path to the top of Stol and later to Prešeren hut (closed). Sun and great views from 1700 m asl onwards, pics tell the most. Path well trodden, no crampons needed. Return by the same path. Worth it.

Fantastic. Any crowd at the top?

No, actually alone on top. When I descended to the saddle and started down to the valley, met 7 people, some with skis, others at my level.

I was on Stol yesterday (21.1.2010). It was very nice, conditions favorable. Nothing icy, just frozen snow. Last hour of hike I used crampons.

Today did Stol, conditions ideal except wind that greets you at saddle. Cold as it hasn't been for a long time all thanks to wind, otherwise GREAT!!! sas

In the valley it was lightly snowing in the morning, fog, at height ca. 1500m again sunny fairy tale. All to the top without gear, path trodden, but caution still needed. Weather though, still can't believe, down dark, fog, up sun, views, sea of fog, summit no wind, it was really warm. Day really magical

Road to Valvazor closed, because arranged only for sledding. At end of track easy to park. From there to hut an hour, if you walk well.

Thanks "šumski" for the info, we'll go an hour earlier from home so there won't be a problem. Nice pics, hope something similar will be offered to us.
