To Triglav?

urskas31. 07. 2013 11:37:18
my experience toonasmeh.... when I first went to Triglav.. we were all relatively inexperienced (only one had been before--from Doliča) and went via Voje valley then to Kredarica..so similar to Pokljuka to Kredarica. Now looking back.. after almost all accesses to Triglav.....I liked Voje-Kredarica more, because much through forest (good in heat) but drags...like from Krma. From this view better and faster paths from Vrat valley. If someone goes to Triglav thus prepared for some climbing and could do secured path over Prag. That's my favorite...though demanding in parts...nothing serious. Paths like Krma, Voje valley, from Pokljuka just drag too much and path itself not so interesting.. over Prag is already an experience the path itself. Just my opinion.

I'd also recommend the path from Kot. Only downside is terribly bad road (was like that two years ago, maybe improved now), but once survived, impressive surroundings accompany the hiker (Vrbanovi, Ladja, Rjavina, Pekel...). High chance to meet chamois. Staničeva hut is charming too. Towards Kredarica difficulty increases a bit (along Rži ridge). Ascent Kredarica-Mali Triglav is no harder for me than Planika-Mali Triglav.
I recommend arriving in the valley before evening, so as not to get lost in that thicket down there.

Path over Prag was annoying for me, because narrow parts and walking alternate constantly and you're never quite sure if poles should be in backpack or in hand.

From Kot, it goes past Kredarica; for beginners, this path is not really suitable. From Vrat, all are harder, true that they are interesting, but the path goes past Kredarica and on to Mali Triglav. The path from Pokljuka is long but has less elevation gain than from Krma valley. Still among the easier ones from Rudno polje and right after from Krma past Planika; in this case from Krma, you need to be careful at junctions not to go towards Kredarica.
Still, I recommend the tour from Pokljuka. Last year, I heard from a friend when they went to Triglav: no one knew the path or the difficulty, no one had hiked in the mountains before, minimum fitness. Later he told me "first and last time to Triglav" plus wrong starting point, consequently the path they chose.
Of course, first ask the participants if anyone fears heights, has any prior fitness, and if they are prepared to go on a steeper path, in this case past Kredarica but starting from Krma. Normally, they go up first past Kredarica, back past Planika. From Planika, there is another path over T.škrbina, but that is a very demanding marked path.
Best to choose a smart path; even if it's their first time up, from Rudno polje it will be a beautiful path or tour. From Vernar, I saw columns of hikers from the direction of Rudno polje. On the way back towards Krma, I met someone who was already quite at the end of their strength zadrega

or me?
Start would be from Lj.
Around what time approx. need to start from Lj.?

@aleš81: this path is the "easiest".. of course the ascent to Triglav is fitness demanding, so it depends on how much fitness you have or in what sense are beginners meant? Go to the mountains early, the sooner the better.. anyway it's hard to say when you should leave from LJ., you know that yourselves, some go up in a couple of hours, some the whole day.. it depends from person to person...

Path from Pokljuka to Triglav is among the easier paths. From Rudno polje, past Vodnikov dom, to Planika suitable for anyone who can manage it fitness-wise.
From Ljubljana departure at 4:00.

Sandra or Janez, thanks to both for explanations, is this path well marked at junctions, no panic that we might miss the path ...eek

There is also a map Julijske Alpe - eastern part. Otherwise it's well marked and there are always lots of people on this path.

Okay, since I'm one of those who wrote some reservations about the Pokljuka path above, let me explain these reservations a bit.
Problem of the Pokljuka path is the first part, i.e. section Pokljuka-Velo polje. There the path goes like this: first short (say 15 min) steep ascent from road straight into forest, then path starts climbing hillocks - up, down, up, down, finally catches last gully and climbs it to Jezerc and then to Studorski preval. Follows first short steep descent, then looooong (about an hour) traverse flat or even slight descent around Tosca to Velega polja. And I think you can imagine how nasty this traverse and these hillocks are on descent, when legs already hurt and you have only beer on Pokljuka before your eyes. Actually on descent only 15 min from car you reach top of last ascent! As for elevation gain, it is indeed nominally least, but consider also quite some intermediate ascents, so in practice difference not that big. From Kot (or also Krma) no such psychological moment. There on descent you just plunge into valley. Knees hurt, but goes more or less by itself.
There, that's what I had in mind when I preferred to recommend Kot. But Pokljuka direction really technically easiest and certainly one option. You'll have to decide yourselves anyway.

On Sunday 4. 8. 2013 heading to Triglav from Rudno polje. Given high temperatures forecasted I'm wondering how many liters of fluid to take. I was thinking 3 liters home-made isotonic drink (water, salt, lemon, sugar) would suffice.

Can be less too, since you can refill at Vodnik hut. Otherwise on a day like Sunday I'd drink at least 4 liters in mountains.

@ 5Xum, thanks for quick comment. Yes, if can refill on path then two bottles in backpack really enough.
This tour marked ca 6 h. Is this real time for average hikers (this year some multi-hour tours already done) or time "rounded up?" nasmeh

That's true too @primoza nasmeh, I reckon crowds more downhill, since it's Sunday and people returning, well true vacation time too... but yeah in those areas almost always crowds in season.

Previous days I was up, at Kredarica, Triglav and Dolič and really no crowds. Sunday ca. 50 slept at Kredarica, Monday much less, maybe 30.
To Triglav maybe 40 went, no jams or waiting.
Weather nice, warm, just windy on top and quite cold. Worst actually below 1500 m a.s.l. where very hot.
Survived 4 wonderful days, back soon.

Hi,

I'm interested if there's any way to get by public transport to the nearest starting point for Očak? As far as I know now in summer there's a bus from Ljubljana via Vršič to Bovec, does that help me or where should I go by bus?

Thanks

You can take the bus towards Kranjska Gora, get off in Mojstrana and walk to Vrata - then hitchhike to Aljažev dom nasmeh... You can try from Bled to get to Rudno polje on Pokljuka - the bus will take you to Krnica (Gorje), from Krnica you can also instead of Pokljuka walk through Radovna to Krma... You can go to Bohinj, then from Zlatorog towards Savica and over Sedmera, or also (if the bus really goes over Vršič) get off in Trenta and head towards Zadnjica... In any case you'll be late, summit probably the next day..., blood, sweat and tears will accompany you... nasmehnasmehnasmeh

I think the best option is by train to Bohinjska Bistrica, then with the free bus to Savica and over Komarča along the Triglav Lakes valley to Prehodavci where you overnight. Second day to the summit and back to Pokljuka from where you can hitchhike to Bled, from there by train back home cool

By bus to Mojstrana, go to Vrata and via one of the routes to the summit. Descend via Dolič to Zadnjica and go to Trenta for the bus back towards LJ. Timetables are posted on Alpetour's site.
