Today's forecast of clear weather in the northwest part of Slovenia lured me to Veliki vrh. I saw the clear sky over Kofce while driving to Tržič. From the parking under Matizovec to Kofce, the sun still shone partly; from the hut onwards there was fog, though it looked all the time like the sun would show. But it didn't. A strong southwesterly wind was blowing. The trail is dry and frozen.

Winter showed its teeth only a little so today I am heading to Veliki vrh. To the hut at Kofce minimal snow - a couple of cm then more with each elevation gain, a cm more. To the branch to Kofce gora, a group ahead made some tracks, who turned there, I go straight to Veliki vrh. More snow on the ridge where it sinks to a little above the knee. Under the snow icy in places so crampons are recommended. The summit wrapped in fog so no views.

We tracked to Kofce gora, then along the ridge to Veliki vrh... nice proper winter hike today. A bit of everything: first clear sky, later clouds and a bit of fog, lots of wind and cold mežikanje

Winter gear recommended, I'd say mandatory.

At the hut still nice and just a few clouds

At Veliki vrh with full winter gear, recommended today

Since last visit new fixed ropes it seems...meanwhile went once via climber's path and ridge down to Šija

From Mrzli studenec over Planina Kofce to Veliki vrh and both Toplars. Down the ridge from Kofce gora. We had a nice plan also for both Kladivas, but fog, cold and strong wind prevented it. I was freezing again like for a long time not. Last time 16.1. on Zelenjak nasmeh

Some snow on paths, but ok without crampons. Štruklji still super. I add, frozen grass above the pasture very dangerous for slip, so careful.

Today morning similar route, same intentions as Tinky and Todi, difference started later, only eastern Toplar summit, not on Kofce gora. Conditions, Tinky wrote all. Well, I used small crampons for ridge walk.
First Stane overtook me, we chatted nicely and greet him nasmeh

! Later met about 20 hikers – quite a few for such conditions. No štruklji, had to wait long jezen

So from backpack cool

At early mass no one - not even the priest

On V. vrh even Srečko peeked a little from the backpack

Eastern summit of Toplar - if he dropped the backpack it would probably blow it away

Yesterday Vranček - Hajnževo sedlo - via secured path to Veliki vrh and descent back to saddle - continuation to Košutica. The path is dry, crosses a small snow patch that causes no problems. But it was muddy and wet and caution is needed on descent.

dry but slippery - not possible because we were very early

and continuation up there Košutica waits ;)

and the sun shows itself too - the views are getting even better

Yesterday again to Veliki vrh. Of course start at the large organized parking lot by the macadam that leads to farm Matizovec. No higher with vehicle. Then pleasant marked path takes us to planina Kofce. It is indeed a bit steep and rocky from the start. Kofce greet us in the sun and with wonderful view of the entire Košuta ridge - almost entire. It's 12 km long. Besides Stol group it's the most powerful group in Karavanke. Runs from Šental valley where with Veliki vrh first exceeds 2000 m and then stretches east in more or less continuous chain all to Kort or Obirski. Has six independent peaks and 13 side ones and all exceed 2000 m. Hope I got at least this right. Both huts-inn next to them invite with their goodies. Hut advertises best struklji far around. You'll see pics. Here decision falls on weaker members - they go to planina Šije. Some of us to Veliki vrh. Hike in such nice weather up is pure enjoyment. View was fantastic.

These are the štrukli. I won't comment which were better, the koroški from Olševe or the gorenski from Kofc. I ate both. Here they even offer chocolate ones. That's something for children.

Whoever wants can turn to the neighbors at plašarijo for excellent homemade delicacies from masovnik to wholegrain štruklji.

Three quarters of the group went ahead to planina Šijo.

Already right above the hut horses are grazing.

Here a steep path branches off to the right to Kofce gora.

In the little valley below the path to Veliki vrh a herd of cattle is grazing.

Not too demanding. Even children manage it.

A nice path through the blueberry bushes awaits us.

Somewhere around here Toplar-2.000m is hiding from us.

Here on the summit of Veliki vrh -2088m. Higher only Veliko Kladivo-2094m and Košutnikov turn-2133m.

The ridge follows the border with Austria.

Then back down to planina Kofce for delicious štruklji.

On 10.9. via Pl. Korošica and Hanževo Saddle to Veliki vrh. Fourth time on the climbing path, but never encountered such a wet path. In the initial part without protections, much caution was needed; rocks were slippery. Higher, all dry. Obviously, in this time the wall is such and the sun doesn't dry it fully.
On top, wonderful views and many hikers who went to the peak.

These days we had warm days in the mountains and also on Veliki vrh it was no different. No snow except one or two patches, warm like spring, only flowers not blooming. More at: http://www.gore-ljudje.net/novosti/130987/

Once more before the new year to Veliki vrh and Toplar. The path was dry for a change. Along the ridge strong wind was blowing and it was cold too. Some of us wandered around here. On the planina, obligatory štruklji with cranberries.
