Today from Ljubelj along the southern path towards Vrtača. On the path there was some new snow, in places drifted up to half a meter, under it hard base.

Saturday, 21.5.2016: Path partially bare, mainly from the hut at Zelenica onwards need to cross quite a few snowfields. Caution in the morning when snow at the edge of snowfields is fully icy and sweeps you away easily. Watch on grassy slopes, even late afternoon still several spots despite sun covered with morning slush and very dangerous for slip. Crampons yes or no, let each decide themselves. Had them with me but didn't use, cursed myself badly after descent....

Today after a long time on a cloudy day to Vrtača. Whole area around there whether to Zelenica, Begunjščica and Vrtača was full of hikers-they went further-to Stol, to Celovška hut.

This area of Zelenica where views open onto the Begunjščica ridge is very beautiful with its screes.

Today's goal - Vrtača from Zelenica - of course approximated.

Towards the saddle, where you turn right to Vrtača.

At the saddle the left face of Vrtača reveals itself.

Before the summit also a bit on the snowfield.

Down to the hut at the source of Završnica.

Yesterday a nice tour to Vrtača and Svačica. Starting point Trate, past Celovška hut to Belščica saddle and on to Vrtača. On return also short hop to Svačica. Path without special features. Very windy though, views wonderful. Nice greeting

Pathless and no climbing but with a "small detour" it can be done like this:

Rockfall on Vrtača: Sept 14 I was on Vrtača, saw the rockfall like in pic, no major impact on path. Is this the current one Austrians noticed?

Today from Ljubelj to Vrtača. Mainly interested in recent rockfall. It's quite extensive, but from our side still spot for photos, terrain cracked and more will fall. Few meters right to new path good choice. Weather nice clear but cold, occasional strong wind on ridge. Zelenica hut closed.

Vrtača 24.11.2016, ice axe still stands mežikanje

Snow on Slovenian side for sample, more than usual in rockfall "detour" up to knees and over.
Ridge wind such I was a bit scared...

Today up South Gully via central couloir with two rappels. South side pit showed facets deep contrary to expected. Snow not settled at all, hard only on avy track. Top had fog patches but cleared fast. Descent central nothing special but pure powder. Another pit below gully, snowpack very stable. Probably only ones on Vrtača, met three hikers in Suho Ruševje. Walking through Dry scree advise against, really for those with strong nerves and patience. Sinking to butt sometimes. Nice day good team. nasmeh

Today on Vrtača via Y up/down, morning conditions ok. Later snow well crusted, good sinking in dry scree. In Y could use a bit more snow to cover jumps. Otherwise divine weather, on return to Zelenica to Jož.
