Today I went, without a mentor, with Matej and Dejan to Vrtača. We went to check how much snow had actually fallen. The most trouble was caused by the frozen path just before Zelenica. Further to the summit the path was snowy, but the shoe gripped well. Winter gear (crampons, ice axe) not needed yet. On return the snow was already melting nicely and on some parts the path was already bare, so return to the valley without issues.

maybe I'll do the Saturday hike for the first time:

1. is it currently accessible without issues with a slightly lower personal car past Završniško jezero to the Tinčkova koča parking?
2. I'd start the hike when darkness just leaves, approx. around 6 a.m. If there's still some snow/ice (where exactly on the path?), is it recommended to take at least microspikes, maybe also an ice axe? I assume being at the top around 10 a.m. The path description says: … The path ahead starts to ascend steeply on very steep and slippery slopes ... 20 minutes of walking on and along the ridge, which is somewhat exposed in places, dangerous for slipping in the entire section ... Due to steep grass, there is a high risk of slipping when wet.
3. are nice views expected between 10 and 10:30 according to the forecast? I can survive sometimes without them too.

We were on Vrtača on Saturday 24.10. from Ljubelj. Snow started only on the ridge, it was southern and we walked on it without trouble without crampons and microspikes. Probably now much less snow or none at all.

Road to Tinčkova koča in bad condition, with personal car one can hardly reach the hunter huts. Path to Vrtača dry, bare.

Yesterday at the top from Ljubelj. To Zelenica carefully, lots of frozen snow, goes without crampons. From Zelenica snow somewhere to junction for Zelenjak and Palec, slippery only in reverse direction. Further path mostly bare, here and there a couple of meters of snow avoidable. More patches towards top, trampled, some caution on descent needed, all goes without crampons

Yesterday I did a nice circular tour around the wonderful polygon called Karavanke. Ljubelj-Zelenica-Zelenjak-Palec-Vrtača-Srednji vrh-Roblek-Veliki vrh(Begunjščica)-Prevala-Ljubelj. Weather medium cloudy and windless. Views phenomenal. Overall excellent tour nasmeh

To Zelenica I recommend the right upper forest path. That way you'll avoid ice on the road. To start, I conquered Zelenjak and Palec (conditions excellently described in Zelenjak-Palec thread). Continued to Vrtača. Considered path over Mala glava but at junction due to not knowing the path changed mind and went the normal way. On the way to Vrtača met first hikers. Also considered visiting Stol but due to winter conditions in Orlice dropped the idea. Conditions for Vrtača well described by predecessor. After Vrtača headed to Srednji vrh. Path without issues. Followed Begunjščica. Had two options. Either start with Smokuški plaz and continue to top on Slovenska planinska pot trail or Tinčkova koča - Roblek. Due to possible snowfields on north side of Begunjščica chose the latter. Thus discovered very nice and steep path that didn't trouble me. Roblek was well visited. Followed ascent to Veliki vrh (Begunjščica), descent to Prevala and finally Bornova pot to Ljubelj. Path without issues.

Second time to Vrtača this year. From Ljubelj through the forest to the road above Vrtača hut. The road to Zelenica icy and icy further through the forest too, where the sun doesn't shine all day. In the sun it's warm though. Vrtača was quite visited today, and also towards Stol and Begunjščica quite a few went. Shame that the hut at Zelenica is in the shade most of the day. Almost no wind today. Views magnificent, I can only say: Slovenia, from where does your beauty come.

Up the eastern Y gully, down the southwest couloir. If there was a bit more snow it would be easier. At the last jump before the summit we helped ourselves with a rope. Weather super, even the wind spared us.

What if we compare this Y couloir by difficulty and length with the Turkish gully or the central one in Begunjščica
