Description of mountain:
Vojkova koča is located on the southern edge of the high karst Nanos plateau, near Pleša. This is the prominent peak with television transmitters that is clearly visible from the motorway between Postojna and Razdrto. From the hut or the nearby viewpoint, a wonderful and extremely wide panorama opens up, reaching the Adriatic Sea in clear weather. Visitors can admire the Postojna basin, the Javorniki hills, Snežnik, Vremščica, Slavnik, the Gulf of Trieste, the Vipava valley, Čaven and the Golaki hills. A bust of national hero Janko Premrl Vojko, after whom the mountain hut is named, stands near the hut.
The mountain hut, whose origins date back to 1949, took on a completely new appearance after extensive renovation. The old and dilapidated wooden section was replaced entirely with modern, energy-efficient and fire-safe construction. After the renovation, thirty-six beds are available in furnished rooms. The premises feature modern underfloor heating, while the caretakers have retained a homely touch with a traditional bread oven in the dining room. The hut is well known for its excellent cuisine, featuring homemade stews, delicious walnut štruklji and apple strudel.
When travelling to the summit with family or if the hiking trail is too demanding, Vojkova koča is also easily accessible by motor vehicle. From the Vipava valley, follow the main road between Razdrto and Nova Gorica and turn right shortly before the village of Podnanos towards the sign for Nanos. The ascending asphalt road leads high onto the edge of the plateau, from where a maintained gravel road continues straight to the car park in front of the hut. An alternative road access runs from Podkraj across a picturesque wooded section of the Nanos plateau.
Nanos offers excellent opportunities for short excursions in the surrounding area. The most popular is a gentle walk to the picturesque Church of St Jerome, which stands on the scenic southern rim and provides unforgettable views of the Vipava valley below. The entire area is very popular not only with hikers but also with mountain bikers, thanks to its network of forest roads and tracks. The renovated hut is open all year round: from Wednesday to Friday between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
