Alpinism School

LG, no offense, but online you'll hardly achieve anything. I attended the school physically and not virtually, because the latter doesn't exist yet.
You'll have to muster some courage and sign up at the section and not online, because that's not how it works.

Regards, Jure

That's what I asked them myself, if enrollment is still possible, because if I do something on my own in the mountains I'll get hurt badly, and even if the partner masters it it's unwise from my side, both in the rope team must master mountaineering knowledge and have practice, hiking and mountaineering overlap, but there's a big difference. In school they only teach you the basics and then you have to continue on your own, which would really come in handy for me.

What all will be taught theoretically and practically and I don't know why they write...for those interested in alpinism. As if this necessary knowledge isn't needed for very demanding non-alpinistic tours either. Maybe reading topos not so much, as the rest which is needed. Unless you only hike non-stop to some Blegoš or Velika Planina.

Theoretical lectures cover the following topics:

- knots,
- mountaineering gear,
- first aid,
- ethics and grading ascents,
- reading topos and terminology,
- preparation for rock tour,
- orientation,
- dangers in mountains,
- weather,
- GRZS,
- preparation for winter tour,
- ski mountaineering,
- altitude sickness, frostbite,
- history of alpinism,
- training, nutrition and injuries.

In practical exercises we will cover:

- tying into harness, belaying partner,
- basics of free climbing,
- rappelling and lowering on rope in crag,
- placing pitons, using removable protections (nuts, cams),
- building anchors in rock,
- rope team movement in multi-pitch routes,
- building anchors for rappel and rappelling,
- self-rescue (prusiking),
- rescuing fallen partner,
- transporting injured partner.
- walking with ice axe and crampons,
- self-arrest with ice axe,
- anchors in snow, rope team movement in snow,
- using avalanche kit (beacon, probe and shovel), snow profile and snowpack stability test.

It's not 400 € for everyone, but for those over 30. Obviously they look a bit at the age of participants too, because it takes quite some time to train you and it's bad for development if someone after a couple years, when they could finally help with the youngsters with experience, drops everything. (not saying it's too much now, just understand the logic). Education is more than those official 3 trips, because after school you still need to "polish" with someone experienced who takes you somewhere to get some practice.
Otherwise I'd recommend some climbing school to see if you like alpinism at all, because climbing and hiking are 2 completely different things. Some people just don't handle the sense of danger well (holding a grip in via ferrata or some scree are despite similarity quite different), poor protection or sense for movement in vertical. Nothing wrong with that, just good to find out before buying a bunch of unnecessary expensive gear etc...
And anyway it's smart to climb well beforehand, so it's win-win.

In most cases of joining various courses pensioners have discounts, but times are changing it will hold that this is now more correct. eek
From this price list it is clear that you can hardly teach an old person anything……???

@Busterman: There is really a huge difference between hikers and alpinists, but between mountaineering and alpinism there isn't such a big difference. Bureaucrats have really banned the use of the word mountaineer or mountaineering, but I will always say mountaineer, hiker and alpinist. What someone calls themselves doesn't matter to me. The main thing is that people engage in something and love hills, mountains, in short nature. A hiker visits hiking peaks Lubnik (welcome hikers), Velika planina, Blegoš, no technical knowledge needed, no climbing, some orientation is needed... in mountaineering it's a different story and it often crosses with alpinism. Ridge traverse Košutnikov turn - Tolsta košuta "requires technical knowledge", orientation, grade II, pathless Mala Martuljška Ponca grade I, requires quite some orientation, through gully winter gear (crampons, ice axe), Veliki Oltar via the slab is really II, but already further from bivouac it's demanding, pathless and this certainly doesn't belong to hikers, winter ascents Triglav belong to alpinistic ascents, but with that you're not yet an alpinist, Turski žleb, Rinke, Brana, Vrtača, Špik... in short I call this mountaineering. As anyone interprets it. In a couple of years I will also be an alpinist, I'll climb dozens of III, IV and write "alpinist" on my backvelik nasmeh, crazy, hehe, but is that really the first thing and not something people like, which is free and maintained (climbing routes) and one enjoys, and ultimately shares adventures with others in pictures and words.

All sections have AŠ, almost every year. But for this year you're a bit late, enrollments for AŠ happen in autumn, usually end of September or beginning of October.

Best, Jure

I'd like to ask if there's maybe someone here who's already attended the beginner alpinism school at AO Lj Matica? I can't decide between alpinism or climbing school myself. My first choice is alpinism though, but it lasts a whole 12 months while climbing only 7 weeks. I wouldn't want to sign up now and then in 2 months see that I won't have time for it. So I'm asking for advice on how much time such a school takes you because 12 months is loooong.

Thanks in advancemežikanje

First let me correct you a bit. Alpinism school doesn't last 12 months, but approx 3 years. Of course if your goal is to know how to climb independently (or as leader in the rope) in mountains in summer and winter and at the end also formally pass the alpinist exam. In the first year the school is formal with lectures and guided outings, later it's more organized experience gathering in form of climbing camps.

In climbing school they teach you climbing equipped routes in the crag.

So if you love scrambling on warm rock, short approaches and gymnastic moves, sport climbing is the right thing. Alpinism brings besides sport climbing also long approaches, heavy backpacks, cold, dangers and much nicer mountain experiences.

Regardless of which climbing type you choose, both are ways to spend free time. And after 1 year in neither type you'll be good. If you're short on time and the idea of spending at least one day a week in mountains or crag is repulsive, the best investment is hiring a mountain guide. Pay 200€ and next weekend you can climb a wall that alpinism trainees have to train for a whole year.
