@Todi: maybe in the Central [Gully] instead of hiking poles you could use an ice axe.. don't you think? Don't mislead people on the forum, safety first, right?

this with poles is really weird, e.g. I use them in winter in quite gentle terrain, not that I wouldn't in such a slope, though I know it's not very steep anyway.

sandra, with Todi we were together. He used ice axe, I didn't because snow was dry and crusty in places. Almost no risk of slipping.

Yeah, you'll mess around like this until one slips away and when it starts tossing him around the gully he'll think of the ice axe then.

Calm down, I had it, it just didn't seem needed, even without crampons OK, no problem.

When I was as old as you two are now, I had already been hiking in the mountains for some time, but I still hadn't seen crampons and an ice axe.

If you have to choose it's really better just an ice axe than crampons and trekking poles. I wrote this only because you write and show pics on the forum, lots of people see it and might wrongly imagine the steepness in Centralni. What someone manages without and with an ice axe is their own story and no need to boast publicly about it!

Carrying an ice axe doesn't mean it will activate automatically by itself you gotta know how to self-arrest, Šentanski plaz ain't a training ground for poles.

Up here there's a whole bunch of bright heads. Who cares if someone goes up in flip-flops and holds a watermelon in hand.

I agree, it doesn't concern us, the problem appears when misleading with pics. In Centralni you've got no business with poles in hand!

Whoever wanders around in winter usually knows why. Thanks for explaining how it's done right.

Supersport, usually yes, not always though. Not long ago epic snow profile pics were posted right on this portal. I don't find it controversial if everyone decides by their own judgement whether to use ice axe or not, but equally I don't think it's right to post pics that could mislead someone into potentially dangerous action. tinky, relax I believe you can assess conditions and your skills. My comment was aimed solely at that part of Juš's remark that folks will think of ice axe only when getting tossed down the gully.

The safest is NOT TO FALL. Summer or winter. Even in summer you can fall and slide into the depths, but no one has ice axe with them. Of course safer with ice axe in snow but only if you know how to use it. I think more than half of hikers never tried how to arrest with ice axe. Not enough to buy ice axe and off to hills. In these cases it's even imaginary safety. Check video on this forum /under - Vrtača/ you'll see how much ice axe helps (if not "trained" for its use). ps. taken in Y on Vrtača.

sandra, more than 10 of them on the pic, all such who according to you shouldn't seek there. All have poles.

Similar to Juš, my colleague Silvo thinks the same. People expose themselves not only to the steepness, but also to unknown current snowy mixed conditions and even with improper equipment use, often even without it. When someone gets hurt (God forbid), the quasi-mountaineers will only wake up to reality then, unfortunately .
