Begunjščica

Donat, I also wish you quick recovery!! Regarding photos; given that I was on Begunjščica 4x in the last 14 days, I don't always carry the camera with me, or I don't see the point in shooting the same scenes, but it's true that conditions change week by week!! I love photography a lot, but I notice the problem of digitalization, when photos pile up and we've become too uncritical, and there are simply too many of them. I will try to attach at least a couple of photos to future posts!! Good luck..nasmeh

Today, on the return from Zelenica around 13:30 we observed an avalanche that released in the Begunjščica area after Šentanski avalanche. We were lucky to avoid it, as chunks one meter or more in diameter rolled at high speed towards the middle cable car station.
So, even descent on the classic can be dangerous,
if you're at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I have seen numerous avalanches with my own eyes, including those from which ski tourers "fled" before it carried them away and it happens at night too.

The two of us were already almost at the hut when it happened. One tourer fled to the side, this time he succeeded... well he continued the tour anyway and wasn't the only one. The two of us preferred to sunbathe on Triangel. The slabs on Begunjščica are still huge and really not to be trifled with...

Conditions above Zelenica are excellent in the morning hours, everything is hard and ideal for walking.
No way without crampons1

Today I was on Begunjščica from Roblek. The path is mostly dry, but from the junction towards Zelenica you need to cross quite a few snow fields, the most demanding just below the summit. At least good boots and an ice axe are needed, for a better feeling have crampons with you (classic ones, not microspikes).

I'm interested in the conditions on the north side to Begunjščica. Next weekend I'd climb from Ljubelj to the hut at Zelenica, then to Roblekov dom and finally to Veliki vrh and back. Since I'm not great at winter ascents, does anyone know the conditions up there and how much snow there is? Thanks

Still lots of snow. From Zelenica next weekend it still won't be possible without winter gear.

To make it easier to decide whether to go or not, also read the post of the young guy who walked under Begunjščica on May 1st http://www.hribi.net/izlet/ljubelj_begunjscica_cez_sentanski_plaz_snezni_pristop/11/52/37

Whoaaaa!!! Thanks everyone for these tips, I've changed my mind and will probably head up from the south side via the hut at Roblek, leave north side for summer when things calm and snow melts. jezik

Has anyone been up from Roblek these days? Are there still snow patches on the path or can you get to the summit without winter gear?

A week ago there were three smaller and one bigger snow patch right below the summit (by the wood for path renovation) - for crossing it I used an ice axe for better feel. After a week of warm weather I think no winter gear is needed.
