Hut keepers

What's very wrong is that there's too much alcohol in the mountains and huts. They don't have energy drinks (except a few exceptions). Most people, especially, have their own flask of schnapps with them, as an excuse that a little fits. Those who do more, make mess.

Yeah, they could really sell some energy drinks and energy bars,... that would be more useful than alcohol, which I would simply ban above 1500 m.

Also at Planika I saw some drunks. One ordering at the counter complained about prices: "Yeah, you thought of that well, good!" Yeah, his problem if he came to get drunk at Planika instead of for half the price in the valley. velik nasmeh

For the sake of forging peace you evict them out into the cold for 1h, when they sober up then to the bench in the dining room.

Yeah in the morning the whole dining room is full of shit. Then it's such a problem if cold wind blows outside and you want to drink tea warm in the hut. You can't because a well-behaved dog accompanies you, and it's not even drunk, but it will disturb real mountaineers.
Dog owners and dogs out of the hut, drunks always welcome eek

Since I read only praises for the new hutkeeper at Stanič hut, I'll give my own opinion. On Tuesday I arrived around 12 at the hut, I wanted jota because everything outside smelled of it. The answer was we don't have it and a long explanation that everything had run out, they barely cook because the helicopter delivered a new shipment..., they have 14 Austrians... the explanation lasted and lasted... until I found out they have segedin. 7.5 € portion which seemed small to me, in the segedin just 3 mini meat pieces and some really thinly sliced sausage bits. Because of the sausage the segedin resembled jota more (my luck). The hutkeeper tries hard, too much for my taste. Maybe I just can't forget the previous ones, they were real characters and I visited them every year again.

Yesterday I was at Stol. Despite fog (visibility always max 20 m) I had a really nice day, just because of the keepers. First friendly lady at Prešeren hut, then super hospitable shepherd at Zabreška planina who gave me a map (said at least I'll see where I walk) and finally nice girl at Valvasorjev dom who compensated lack of sun with her friendlinessnasmeh Thanks to all who brightened my day.

Today visited Cojz hut at Kokrsko saddle too and must highly praise the keeper who is extremely friendly and obliging and also knowledgeable. Identical experience at Kamniško saddle. Full praises to both! nasmeh

We were there too over the weekend, weather was bad but goulash (bograč) was top-notch. And keepers deserve every praise too ... nasmeh

Nice Saturday for wandering around the Vršiči. With a friend heading to Mihov dom. When I was there the first time, I thought the lady really had so much work she couldn't do everything. Now it was the same again. We ordered homemade Kranjska sausage which would have been perfect then, but unfortunately the owner said too much work and no time to cook. OK, too much work two families??? When we had accepted, we asked for something sweet and the answer was similar! Should I heat it??? I wonder why such people who already at the entrance let you know to get lost even do such activity?? Does anyone have similar experiences?? Anyway, before heading up, eat well in the valley because obviously at Mihov dom no time for cooking zmeden

When we two were at Slemen in summer time and first stopped by for beer at Mihov dom, the food also smelled good to us. We ordered štruklje. We were served lovingly and quickly, despite full tables. Maybe they had extra help in summer.

Interesting...We slept over this weekend from Friday to Saturday, and the hutkeeper didn't mind coming to open the hut, light the stove and cook just for us (two families). And it wasn't the first time. Based on my previous experiences, Mihov dom is by far the friendliest hut on Vršič, it has some spirit of originality that higher inns haven't had for a long time.

I have a feeling that every now and then someone pops up who provokes a bit about this service. So we don't get bored on the forum! If I'm wrong, I apologize. It would be interesting to hear the other side of the story from the hutkeeper.
Otherwise, we probably don't go to the mountains for good service and good food. There's plenty of that in the valley and it's cheaper. Why hike up for it.

I'm always interested in how different people can have such different experiences with the same people. Probably because everyone exaggerates a bit when describing their side of the story? mežikanje

Too bad, really a shame that no hutkeeper describes their experiences.
I know two hutkeepers with whom I sometimes sit for an hour and chat about hutkeepers' problems.
About hut visitors you hear such stories that if you didn't know the hutkeeper for years you wouldn't believe such things are possible. Luckily, there aren't many problematic visitors.
Plus various inspectors, customs... and stupid laws and regulations
it's not easy for them
