Hut keepers

skalar5014. 06. 2011 14:56:59
huts are slowly opening again for summer...and with them new stories with keepers... maybe despite previous thoughts it would still be worth keeping this rubric "alive" until mid-September (even if PZS site has it).
One more option for the people to write their experiences... And thus one more chance that something might stick to someone from PZS tops (read individual societies)...

I think that Slovenian huts have been moving a bit for the better in recent times.
Especially in high mountains the catering offer is declining in quality. It's not all good for the mountaineer who comes for a hot meal, like some watery soup with a few floating vegetables on top and sausage from a few years ago, so that in the morning regenerated he goes on the trail. Often in the peak hiking season it happens that keepers literally rip off hikers with double or triple prices of basic goods like bottled water, overnight stays etc. Prices of services and food should be at least partially equalized everywhere, since they are property of PDs and not in private ownership. It also happens that certain huts that sell cow products (sour milk, cheese) these or their PDs limit and take away the right of nearby mountain pastures because of competition to sell dairy products. In mid-mountains where more water is available, mountain huts should also think about introducing showers for every hiker who wants to refresh and get rid of sweat. On mountain paths there are still too few volunteer markacists who would care for passability of paths and marking signs, not to mention winter ones. Keepers should besides announced employment criteria also be mountain lovers and not just people who work up there and complain on the spot that they see only mountains all the time.zavijanje z očmi

Maybe the quality offer really lacks somewhere, but even more true is that people have become too spoiled and would like the same offer and choice somewhere in the mountains as in the city center. Not long ago in a very visited hut where bean stew, jota, one-pot stew and buckwheat mush (and some pastries) were available, someone asked if he could get fries!?!zmeden The keeper was so shocked he almost hit the floor with his jaw. I believe improvements could be made somewhere.
Personally I've always been satisfied so far and everywhere. Even in some huts criticized here.

We all know there won't be pizza with truffles and artichokes or grilled fish there. The difference is whether the staff cooks the beans well or just throws into the pot whatever they have at the moment which should already be good. The personal approach of the cook to the dish he prepares is important, because more than physical food it's important what vibrations the cook adds or brings into the food, positive or negative.

If I limit myself to the last five years, all praise. Ambience in huts, choice of food and drink, friendliness of staff, expertise of staff (in the evening they hang out the weather forecast themselves, know everything about the surrounding mountains and paths there - conditions), when you book accommodation no problems and everything works perfectly, etc. etc. Oh, don't forget. I wrote about experiences from abroad, at home I haven't stayed overnight for a long time, even if the tour lasts 16h.

In previous years, prices mainly bothered me, similar to what viharnik already mentioned. If the hut is owned by PD then the price for accommodation, food and drink should be as on the PZS website, not everyone doing their own thing.

I don't mean to criticize anyone, I'd just add some of my impressions from visiting the Vittorio Emanuele hut, which is at 2735 m altitude in Italy!!! and is the starting point mainly for the almost pilgrimage path to Gran Paradiso (4061m). Before the visit we of course reserved a 4-bed room. For half-board it was necessary to pay 36 EUR per person.
As a PD member it was actually cheaper everything that could be bought in the hut. E.g.: Cappuccino cost 1.- EUR !!! In short, about 30 % cheaper for PD members.
WC was clean and tidy, drinking water could be obtained anytime and free, even hot!!, trash cans placed at every step, inside also three for separate waste collection, food and drink served also outside the hut, staff friendly, no need to tidy the room, although we did it out of habit, also for early departure to the summit, no need to pay for the room right away, but only after return from the summit,..
And since I mentioned dinner and breakfast, let me say that they really stuffed us for dinner; for starter choice between vegetable soup and pasta, then main course beef in pieces with stewed vegetables in sauce and for dessert pudding, compote and I don't know what else..
Breakfast classic butter, jam, tea or white coffee..
And all this at height 5m lower than our ŠKRLATICA !!!eekeekeek

Well well, I also agree that the quality of food could be better somewhere, same with more affordable prices. But by no means do I accept that some expect hotels in the mountains (chambermaids, hot showers, WCs with sewage, trash cans...). We must realize that all wastewater in the mountains must be poured into the environment, thus consequently polluting nature. If a person manages a bit, he quickly finds a solution for such unimportant problems, which in truth arose only with our spoiling. I e.g. in case of overnight take some moist wipes with me, which nicely replace the shower, drinking water I always have in reserve, trash anyway must always be taken down to the valley, where you can sort them as you likenasmeh

Huts abroad? Comparison with Slovenia? One experience was written a few "posts" ago by "parkeljc"...
I myself have quite a few similar experiences (mainly) from Austrian mountains. Do the men (sorry ladies), who run PD really never stray into nearby rocks (huts) also outside the country?

For me personally a mattress without bedding would suffice. Warm meal, one-pot stew. Tea and drinks. Quite enough. If the hut offers more, I treat myself to some of that extra. I talked to some keepers in France, Switzerland and Austria. There it's customary to reserve overnight stay. I don't know how many times I've experienced them telling me the hut is full and offering another date. Order is order. Surely they wouldn't leave me outside if I arrived at a full hut by force of circumstances. That way they know how many guests to cater for. Breakfast and dinner at exact time. Lights out for night rest likewise. Offer in the hut is rich, also "commercial" things like souvenirs, creams, mountaineering gear, maps, clothing . . .
And there, that's abroad, everything works. That they really welcome you as a guest, I don't even mention. And so I don't "bash" our huts too much - long ago I got tired of high mountain inns, crowds without order, unfriendliness, and late night parties started to bother me too. From what I've heard nowadays it's not much different, from first hand I really can't claim that. And so at home I rather practice so-called instant mountaineering (all-day tours, from dawn to dusk), abroad longer tours I happily split into two or more days. Not much hope that it will get better here soon, unfortunately.

Perhaps the most suitable model or example for our hut managers, if they don't see beyond our borders, is precisely Komna. It stands on the border between mid-mountains and high mountains and offers good cuisine, renovated premises, diligent caretaking staff and friendliness, house rules and cleanliness, prices appropriate for the quality of food they prepare and accommodation. With us only high mountains lack, especially around Triglav and also elsewhere in our mountains, where they think that since they are so high, the food can match that. But the rule holds that where there are main hiking trails and crowds of hikers, in huts they don't care much about quality, but more about salty prices, elsewhere with fewer hikers the staff is aware of every visitor and maximally engages in the kitchen and completely different reception. This applies both to Polhograjci and the highest located posts. Because of that then on the way back I rather leave those few € at some good inn in the valley.

I'm wondering if it's really true that there's a new hut keeper at Golte again?

@jprim
At the Mozirje Hut on Golte there is indeed a new keeper again. Really strange things are happening at this hut. When after a long time they get a good keeper, they replace him for reasons (interests) incomprehensible to me. The previous keepers, Katica and Danilo, were reallycool, body and soul for the job. But politics is politics, be it in parliament or in the mountains, we hut visitors are not important in this anyway.zmeden I just hope the new crew will be just as friendly. If I've stepped on someone's sore spot with this, let them reflect, since many other visitors of this hut think the same.
Best regards from under the beautiful Golte, Janez

Hut keepers? What about "hikers" (guests), isn't there anyone over them?

JTrogar, I already thought I wasn't in the right hut (although I know it well of course) given your previous praises of the keepers, when I recently stopped from Boskovec for a drink at Mozirje Hut zadrega, now it's crystal clear to me; lp

When I read all these comments, it's really best I stay in the valley. Here no problems, inns as many as you want, if one doesn't suit you, if the waitress is old, just change location.
Trail markers please mark paths far from huts and mountain homes.
There was a time when you had to pay an entrance fee to enter a hut.
Well, I won't stay home, I'll still go to the mountains as before, with sandwiches in the backpack, tea in the thermos...

It's not really about hut keepers but about provisioning. In the end it falls under this topic.
