The forecast for Tuesday in August was bad weather and rain all day and then better weather from Wednesday onwards. Nevertheless, I decided to hit the trail on Tuesday from Vršič to the hut under Špik. The forecast didn't materialize and it was nice weather all day. When I arrived at the hut, there were some people, but they all vanished towards evening. The air was very clear and from the benches in front of the hut one of the best views in the Slovenian Alps from Jalovec across Prisojnik and Razor to Triglav and then Prehodavci and mountains above both sides of the Soča. Only me and two caretakers admired this view. I was surprised and proud of myself too, because I saw how much I had hiked in the mountains last year. The forecast for the next day was nice weather and lots of people were at the hut and on Jalovec on Wednesday, but the wonderful view from the previous afternoon had vanished. More than ten years ago I started the transverse trail in Maribor and every year I go for a few days. I don't just pick zigzags but go the whole trail from hut to hut. On the trail I met lots of people and it seems the best people go into nature (in Slovenia as anywhere else). One problem on the trail is poor markings: no markings at junctions, outdated markings that can't be seen anymore, very few markings with number 1 meaning transverse. Fortunately, the Triglav area is very well marked, from Mojstrana to Vršič. Unfortunately, Jalovec is already too far from Triglav. Markings are outdated and hard to see. But I saw four or five meaningless texts on rocks (triglavski has pictures of two of them). Red paint was available, but instead of renewing markings it was used to pollute the Slovenian Alps. Next year back to the mountains. Good luck to all on the trail.

Yesterday we were on Jalovec. We went from Tamar over Kotovo sedlo. The path is nicely newly marked. On the last part of the path there's still snow from a few days ago in some spots on the path, but nowhere too dangerous. With a little care it goes. The whole path was shrouded in fog yesterday and a terribly cold wind. At the top, however, sun awaited us and the feelings were phenomenal. P.S.: The dilemma about whether you can drive to Tamar by car or not is gone, namely the wild boars have torn up the start of the road where the barrier used to be and the road is no longer passable for passenger vehicles.

Maybe someone knows if the Hut under Špičko is still open? Thanks.

Yesterday I made it to Jalovec summit. What can I say? Magnificent mountain, demanding and tiring ascent rewarded at top with great views. Those who've been up know what I mean. No wonder Mr Kugy still admires it. Shelter under Špica open only till Sunday. Lp

Jalovec is certainly admirable (awe-inspiring). The most beautiful mountain for me. It tempts me too to go up there once more this year.

We too returned from Jalovec yesterday. Wonderful two-day tour from Loška Koritnica over saddle Čez Brežice to Špič, where we overnighted. Then to Jalovec, descent to Kotovo sedlo and back to Koritnica (Mangart direction). Wild nature, beautiful views and no visitors. Thanks M. and T. for the beautiful tour.

I went for one day. Have to admit, tough, but you can still get back nicely before dark. At least be at the start at 7, with all stops, photos and obligatory one-hour summit admiration you can return by six pm. At the hut wonderful hosts serve the best barley soup under the sun. All praise for neatness and friendliness. But they actually head home to the valley on Sunday after noon.

Where was your start and how long did the whole tour take?

Aljoša1, my start was at Vršič, left of the path to Mojstrovka. We started with my husband at 7:05 from the parking lot below Tičarjev dom, the path descends quite a bit almost 200m, then we reached a junction where right is the path over Mali kot (3.5 hours), left to Špiček (1:15 hours). We decided on Mali kot to the wall of Goličica, then there's a nice climbing section (too short in my opinion), too long over scree, then ascent over nice rocks of Jalovec and along the ridge to the summit. Probably can't compare to mountain runners, I like to enjoy in the mountains, take photos and admire the mountains, so we took 4.5 hours to the summit, 1 hour on top, then quite some time to Zavetišče pod Špičko (2 hours), then some time in the hut, then another 3 hours to Vršič. Total 11 hours.

Unfortunately, Jalovec will probably drop out, because part of my family can't decide whether to go to the summit or somewhere else. Otherwise, thanks for the info.

In August I was on Jalovec. Nice tour no doubt. With a buddy we started at 06:00 from Tamar, to which we drove by car (it was still possible then). To the summit via Jalovec saddle 4:20 hours, back via Kotkovo sedlo, where on descent it was a bit uncomfortable as there are no fixed protections on top or they are sparingly placed (3:40 hours). So at normal pace and stops we were back in Tamar at 15:00. Otherwise a very nice trip. One of the nicest tours.

This picture was taken about half an hour before the summit from the Kotkovo sedlo direction. Best regards.
