Same on 22.7., Sunday. Despite 1.5 hour drive to Kamniška Bistrica, we were early and at 7 in hut at saddle. Nice chat with hut warden and view of excellent art exhibit mainly Himalaya peaks - artist Cene Griljc. Below pleasant fast walk, at saddle fully winter conditions, cold strong wind and some rain drops. We skip climbing Upper Pillar (corr. note Klemen) to Šija Brane and all three head through strong wind on trail to Šija. There still strong wind, wet rock, foggy. Partner sadly eyes harnessed rope, but further on we gear up and head from trail up rocks. Wet rock, lots of scree, wind and thickening clouds reason after few pitches to traverse right back to path below summit. Up to top where our planinka already quite frozen. But excited by meeting hare just below summit, both surprised walked together a bit. Descent, lower down some view to Okrešelj and valley ahead. At saddle wind even stronger. Short in hut and back to valley, at Bistrika spring refreshed only feet this time, as after cold wind more refresh not appealing. Nice day in mountains, views next time, all to see still there.

Vik, I'm correcting you: Upper pillar from Šija Brane ... you're right, everything stays in place Some more impressions on my blog.

Today I went up from Logarska valley. Perfect day for hills. Not too hot, few clouds. It felt more like some training. It took me 1h 25min to Kamnik Saddle. Funniest was when going back down, meeting all I overtook before and they couldn't believe I'm already returning. On way back just before Okrešelj I caught someone I met going up (he was already descending then) and I had to laugh. Not bragging but never happened that 30ish hikers remember me and every 2min descending answering "already back?" Interesting.

Something interests me. On Friday evening I'm heading to Kamnik Saddle. Wondering if the hut is still open and what the price is for overnighting in the hut for two? Thanks And if they have a contact number for someone from the hut or something similar, and what the summer conditions are like at the saddle?

Where do you see any panic?

well not that it's panic I don't see it just asking if it snowed or something cos few people with me don't know how it is so asking if normally accessible except raining, asking

Crampons? It didn't freeze, wet snow... good morning and happy, and safe step, otherwise I'd advise wait till Saturday when nice weather!

To Kamnik Saddle no problem, 'cos at that height just sprinkled. Higher up maybe more snow fallen and frozen too, so caution choosing tour and gear not superfluous, esp. if cools at night.

That's why I'm asking 'cos I don't know the current conditions. So waiting a bit then gotta call the keeper of Kamnik Saddle 'cos think he knows the current conditions at the saddle best. Yeah also that for Brano and Planjava if snowy and freezes wouldn't hurt to take crampons depending on night conditions today and tomorrow. Anyway thanks

View towards Kamnik Saddle shows some snow up to Pastirci. To the saddle, no problems without gear. Planjava might be a different story, because wind makes drifts where snow melts during the day and freezes at night. Access: depends on how experienced you are.

I see a different picture from Lj. Kam. saddle is quite decently snow-covered for this time (about 5-10 cm eyeball) and those low temperatures do their thing. If I went alone, I'd definitely take winter gear, if not you carry it for training anyway. I'm more of a safety person.

Would one need crampons and ice axe up there?

I think there's no need, just a bit better shoes and it'll go since it was +4 degrees of thaw during the day

I'm laughing at @karahawku because I imagine his face. I'd definitely take at least microspikes. The best is to go tomorrow and report a bit. Good luck.

People go to the saddle when there's half a meter of snow or more without winter gear, when there's snow on the path winter gear is needed too, carry it with you! But often it turns out no need to use even crampons or ice axe. Conditions change during the day a lot.
