On Saturday in beautiful, warm weather ascent via Žirovniška path to Stol summit, from snow line onwards straight up the gully all the way to the top, using crampons and ice axe. Had lots of luck, as a large rock flew past in the gully, literally behind the corner. Return past the hut via Zabreška variant, wonderful circular tour with beautiful views. Recommend.

Since our planned family hiking weekend unfortunately fell through , we extended it by one day and went to Stol today. The Žirovnica path is dry to the »rest area«, further some snow patches that pose no problem, the gentle gully leading straight to the saddle between Mali Stol and the summit is still fully snow-covered. Today the conditions for walking on it were great, nothing broke through!!! . First we climbed to the summit, where a whole flock of jackdaws joined us »sniffing« the snack , then down to the saddle, to the summit of Mali Stol and to the Prešeren Hut, from there descent via Zabreška Planina. It was a bit misty with some wispy clouds, so the views were not »ten«, but we still enjoyed and spent a wonderful day….

I was up on Thursday and continued the path to Vajnež. There was more snow than just a trace compared to Gita. Up to 2000m no problems with it, further I took the ice axe in hand a few times crossing snowfields. I'm wondering if anyone has described those gullies on the north side of Stol. I can draw them on the last picture too Best, Jaša

Today I don't know who messed up... forecasters or weather . Since the road to Valvazorjevo is passable, I quickly reached the top of Stol via Žirovniška path. Had return to Vajnež in mind but fog did its thing and since once already searched for on Stol , this time back via Zabreška path past Zabreška and Žirovniška planina to Valvazorjevo for earned lunch. Weather cold, windy, foggy, with sun moments and no wind, snow starts where usually blows most, hehe, at gully entry and totally varied, some windpack sinks, some hard snow. Though no views from top, had calm instead

Hi. Tomorrow I plan to do the trip to Stol via the Žirovnica path. What are the conditions up there? Crampons, ice axe? Probably necessary to take with me? lp

Anyway... as long as it's snowy (morning icy) - anyway. Yesterday I went through Rida without ice axe (slightly regretted it). Without crampons it wouldn't go. If you go to Stol midday, it sinks in and it's not so mandatory (gear), still a rule is a rule. You never know..

Yeah, better to carry everything with me than have something go wrong ... first time to Stol in winter season, so I asked a bit... thanks
