yeah, the easiest is to blame the kids for parental mountaineering laziness, oh oh

Nika1, I assume you have kids and you do tours 10-12 hours long?! Lucky you! I'd like to too, but kids don't even think of it, so unlike you, we're forced to make compromises. Or stay in the valley .

well yeah ... for those with enough time (=retirees ) one classic idea that way: train to Žirovnica, then path under the feet ... great for winter-spring time - or autumn

Barriers will perhaps be in use >only< next year.., not installed for Natura 2000, but because this part under Stol will soon be declared regional park.. Even then barriers shouldn't be always closed, but at certain peaks or dates.. Probably few imagine hiking from barrier at Vrtača... and back etc. When closed, they'll collect >a pittance<. We'll see, or probably yes - depending on whom.. That's current unofficial consolation.

Here, first-hand, today at 6:20 there was still plenty of parking in front of Valvazorjev dom . We followed the advice from here and headed up the Žirovniška path and arrived at Mali Stol before the sun reached this side. Super! We returned via the Zabreška path, which is wonderful, very sunny, and a bit long. But a great day behind us!

Hello! Which path to Stol do you most recommend? Not looking at difficulty now, but at nice viewpoints etc., since I'm interested in photography. thanks..

@Marky Most motifs for photography on the Stol traverse, i.e. from Ljubelj to Javorniški rovt. The problem is you don't return to the starting point and there's a transport issue. Maybe autumn is better than today. Currently not much to liven up the picture. Colored larches and autumn leaves make the icing on the cake. Good luck with motifs and of course the hike

This is the one you're looking for, Marky: http://www.hribi.net/izlet/dom_trilobit_stol_cez_rido_medji_dol/11/53/2311 LP! (when you come from Rida, you can (even better) climb from the marked path to the top of the Belščice ridge, nice path there too, visit Mali vrh and Vajnež, then continue via Potoški stol to Stol. Return via marked path or reverse. One-day tour with nice views.. (didn't add them to the route description))

Access to Valvazorjev dom, now (except for a few meters), via the "real" dusty highway.

Gti, what does that mean?

Road from Poljana to the hut is leveled to zero, so probably no questions like "can a lower car get to the hut". Until the first rain, dust clouds will roll (under cars), so I advise against walking along the road to the hut...

Today went seeking sun on Stol from Žirovnica. Fastest path to Stol. Car to Valvazorjev dom. Strictly no parking there, but lot almost empty, hope didn't disturb, reserved for guests. Road now excellent, just finished dumping, milling, rolling. Red gravel sprinkled, sticks better. But think walk to Valvazorjev, new barrier below. From Valvazorjev fastest Žirovniška path-says 2h30m. If closed below adds 1h. Then almost rushing up. Path quite steep. Soon at top Prešeren hut. Up still foggy. Stol summit revealing/hiding. After 15min on top. Sun showed, short wonderful views. Then back to Valvazorju via Zabreška path, used for horse transport to hut. More gradual, 30min longer.

I first reached Stol myself three years ago too, it was also my highest goal, the views were really beautiful.

Yes, the road to Valvazor was fine last week, even though it was closed (no entry sign). Just yesterday we talked in front of Prešeren hut with a member of PD Radovljica (who manages the hut), that everyone can park there and that sign means nothing, or they should remove it (??). Well, everyone who comes from Stol stops for a beer anyway. The road shouldn't be (yet) closed but they had to put up a barrier because they got money for road renovation from EU. "Mountain lover", you won't believe it, Stol was also my first mountain in October 1984. Back then I didn't bother with the road and barriers, but went straight to Stol from Žirovnica train station. Well, back then not everyone had cars. But we had more time. And you won't believe it. It was better.

michael66: Why does this summit of Stol seem a bit suspicious to you? Maybe.. that >bothers< crack (which isn't as small as it looks on the picture).. a bit reminds of Trupej midday.

Today on Stol from Trate via climbing path, where sun accompanied me all the way to the top (as much as you get on the north side), then fog started rising soon, so on return (Celovška hut) about a hundred meters below the saddle I already stepped into it. On the climbing path itself there wasn't too much traffic, but regarding Celovška hut visit-procession
