Just back from the top. Up the Žirovniška, down the Zabreška. Not much snow. The Žirovniška is completely dry and trodden except for two spots where the snow was still frozen at 9 a.m. The Zabreška actually has more snow. Only one ahead of us (on the Zabreška). More snow means not just two but five spots, but it sinks in. No panic otherwise. My buddy and I wanted up the gully, but the snow is frozen and without crampons it's not feasible. Otherwise completely dry conditions, above 1250 sun, above 1450 snow patches start. Temperature great, for short sleeves.

So in summary: For now conditions are not yet wintery except for short path ends.

I was also on Stol today and then via Potoški Stol to Vajnež. Trail nicely passable overall, very little snow. Crampons stayed nicely in backpack, jacket too, missed a short-sleeved shirt. Sunny, no breeze. Without crampons ok through gully no problem, caution still needed of course. Did both variants today - gully and past hut. Really dreamy day.

This time in the morning we drove from foggy gray Ljubljana, where soon on Gorenjska we were greeted by clear skies and sun... we used the road and drove to Valvazorjev dom, continued on Žirovniška path to Stol summit. We returned towards Vajnež, below it turned left, past bivouac to Urbas spring, back to Valvazorja.
Patches of snow on way to summit, not difficult, but in "gully" caution due to slipping needed, met quite a few people and escaped busload of people just in timemežikanje who were rushing to top, hehe.
Today sunny, very warm, summit bit cooler, valley bathed in fog, we in endless fairy-tale views... cliché but... very nice day full of laughs and especially chattingvelik nasmeh

I plan to go to the summit tomorrow 3.11 or Friday 4.11. Judging by the pics, the ascent is autumnal without snow (only on shady slopes) so no "winter gear" needed.. right or wrong?
Tkresevic, super shots... kudos smile

No, winter gear is not needed. Snow lower down is totally softened (read: mud). Gully below summit is a bit harder, but avoidable.

With a friend on Sunday 13.11. we did the loop Valvasor - Vajnež - Potoški Stol - Stol - Valvasor. Always a nice tour, 3.5 hrs. Day was ideal; cold, no wind, sunny, bit of fog in valley.
Below Vajnež. The morning was worth shouting.1

Today on Stol, again from Austrian side via Klettersteig. This path less "crowded", therefore much more varied - also demanding. True, at this season you miss many sun rays. Return past Celovška hut, detour to Svačica, special peak worth not missing. Lpsmile

Information for Stol enthusiasts.
Road to Valvasor drivable. With four-wheel drive no problem, even for two-wheel drive should be okay today. Critical only at first bend (slope) after turn-off for Ajdna, and last sharp right bend at sign
(asphalted section).
Trail from Valvasor trodden, first part to slope under Prižnica more icy than snowy. Further dry snow, which sinks quite a bit off trail. On last flat near rock trail drops into gully between Stols. From here hard crust. To top of Stol and to Prešeren hut trodden.
Back through gully to point where can climb to Prižnica. First 2/3 hard crust, then powder. Could ski at least to Prižnica.
Valvasor hut open every day of week. My dog Max also enjoyed nice day with mesmile.

Which path (Žirovniška or Zabreška) is better to ascend to the summit (less avalanche-prone)?
Thanks nasmeh
like
stefanb22. 12. 2011 11:35:50
In current conditions it's possible to ascend both. Currently only Žirovniška is trodden, Zabreška requires quite a bit more trailbreaking. Usually the winter (hiking) route follows roughly the Žirovniška. But really only roughly. In case of avalanche danger, both are dangerous. Stol poses even greater danger for slipping.

In the morning I drive with rear-wheel drive car to Valvazor, from there towards the summit. Weather pleasantly warm without wind, above prižnico a light breeze is felt, then soon when we see the Vrh it pulls a bit more. Then entry into the gully between Stols and somehow at the fork Stol-Vajnež-Prešeren south wind pulls so that I only lifted my legs, the rest did the wind (hehehe). Snow unprocessed, walking real pleasure, but only to the saddle, last meters I put on gaiters, as it sank over knees in places, summit foggy, which occasionally allowed slightly longer views. Descend by my tracks to Prešernova, then back to saddle and down the gully to prižnica. Enough snow. On the way back met one hiker and three female hikers, probably we were the only ones on summit that day..
