Today on Stol from Završnica, past Valvazor. To here path mostly dry, only last part before hut quite icy. From here on dry snow, at Prižnica already about 20 to 30cm. From Prižnica to the ridge towards hut, follows the hardest part, because here among bushes you sink to your waist several times and progress is very slow. On the ridge almost no snow (blown away) but hindrance strong wind and thick fog, but descent was all the more enjoyable.

How far can you drive by car without chains and without 4x4?

I also ran up to Stol from Završnica this morning for training. Up to Valvazorjev dom no problems. Then ice started to appear. Running was getting more and more demanding. Less and less energy into speed and more into staying on my feet. Up to Prižnica it was somehow still okay. Only above Prižnica does the snow really start. Actually it was still fine for running because the snow was slightly wind-packed and at least soft enough that I could step. Then I turned into the gully between the two Stols. At first the snow was super as it was crusty. Higher up it got more icy and nasty. A few meters below the saddle between the two Stols I turned around since I had no crampons. Then slowly and carefully down the valley.

With crampons I totally believe there was no problem at all. There was quite a crowd up there today.

Yeah, if you're running you don't get cold except at the start (when you're not warmed up yet). Only near the top it got so cold that it was taking my breath away. Running is, from a sports perspective, my by far greatest joy. I wouldn't trade anything for the pleasures and sometimes suffering of mountain running. Otherwise, Stol from a mountain-running perspective is a cursed mountain for me: not even once have I managed a run I'm 100% satisfied with. But this run yesterday was by far my fastest winter ascent of Stol. Not quite to the top, but there's no fun in mountain running in such extreme conditions either. You always have to know when to turn back in time.

Conditions on Stol were ideal today, made up for some foggy and windy ascents, or some sinking ones. In the morning in Radovljica surprised by a snow shower, probably the cloud was only over Radovljica, which cleared and in an hour it brightened up. Easy to drive to the junction for Potoška planina, further on even with difficulties it's hard. Chains or 4x4 (?), really icy. And those 15 minutes don't make up for it. Little snow, path goes in the direction of summer path, nicely trodden and no sinking. No ascenders seen in western direction, it's also very wind-packed, usual path from saddle upwards nicely snowy and trampled. On top a bit of wind, but nothing noteworthy, back down the gully which was well tracked so glissading. Just enough for fun. Exit from gully at Prižnica, if you don't know it you need to pay attention. But it was warm there like spring, too bad to go down. Valvazorjev dom open especially for you (it says), from 6 am. Also praise the careful hutkeeper who in the morning when we passed asked if we have crampons because it can be icy. That's how you prevent some stupidity. In short, Stol performed great today!

Today, early in the morning while still dark, with my wife we started at Valvazorjev dom on the Zabreška path towards the Stol summit. The road to Valvazorjev is quite slippery, so without 4x4 it wouldn't go. In the snow there were no fresh tracks yet. Quite quickly we reached the edge of the forest belt, where we put on crampons as the path was getting more slippery, wind-packed and locally icy. Towards the top it was a bit windy but no force. At Prešeren hut we stayed quite long, refueled and enjoyed beautiful views. Despite longer stop at the hut, we were first on top today. Back we went the same path but soon left it more straight down towards the gully leading directly to the valley. We saw two hikers coming up it and decided to descend it. Since the sun was shining stronger, snow getting more slushy, gully faces south and quite steep, we didn't have a good feeling so we just carefully crossed the gully and preferred to go on steep slope to the old path we came. The ice axe came handy in that part. Satisfied that another nice tour behind us, we head to new adventures. Best regards to all.

Are small crampons sufficient for the path to Stol?

No, I mean those hiking chain crampons Sorry, but I call them small crampons

I think those crampons aren't really the best for Stol. Stol is high alpine terrain after all, with steep slopes in places, icy patches, and those crampons would perform like new summer tires on a snowy or icy road.

New 12-point classic crampons cost 64 euros (current sale at Kibuba), when I looked at Iglusport they had small crampons for 35 euros, classic 12-point crampons fit any footwear, ice axe costs 60 euros, once you buy it you have it for years.
