Today via climbing path to Stol. Path is very well secured, no snow on path. But today very strong wind. Visitors quite a lot. Self-securing needed. Nice regards

Today another super Friday, so I decide after some years to visit Stol againsmile. I start in Završnica past Valvasor hut up the Žirovnica path, descent via Zabreška. Hut on Stol is open permanently until September, no peculiarities on the path. Views from the top were exceptional until a small cloud crept in. Weather station showed 16 degrees at 10 o'clock, practically no wind. Mandatory gear today was sunscreenbig. Not many visitors today.

Stol has many faces just like every mountain (or person). From our side you can blame it only for steepness, no other special difficulties, but from the neighboring country we see it completely differently if we tackle it, of course, via the secured path. Grades B and C adorn it, nicely secured and interestingly placed. Not too long for the body to suffer and not too short to leave us completely rested. Back over the summit and after coffee in Prešernova hut which is open, past Svačica and Celovška hut back to the car. Today already real summer, hot already in the morning, the sun gave me tan lines on my arms even though I don't have a t-shirt.jezik Path nice and without peculiarities that wouldn't be its usual part. Lots of visitors today.
Morning view of the north side of Stol, the path runs along the fairly visible right (overgrown) ridge.1

Also we two with better half today on Stol - via Žirovniška gora and Zabreška dol. Wonderful vistas, excellent kitchen and service as always in Prešernova hut, of course also in Valvasorjev dom.....only disturbed by cold wind around noon on top. Otherwise Karavanke's champion besieged from all sides. Even at three pm climbed from Valvasorjev dom towards summit. nasmeh

I'd like to do the path from Valvasor towards Zelenica, under Vrtača to Stol.
From Stol then via Belščica towards Medji dol back to Valvasor for the car.
I'm interested if on the way to Medji dol it's possible to turn, or if it's marked, via planina Stamare, Olipova planina, Potoška planina to Valvasor so no need to go to Javorniški rovt.
Also interested in the "upper" path supposed to be under Vrtača to Stol, not marked on map as marked - no need to descend to Kožne. Is it visible enough?

Thanks, Olga

One option is, after descent from Belščica to transverse, descend a bit more to Hrašenska planina. Hut visible whole time of crossing on ridge. Under it find path leading right, soon (at next hut) turns left and descends to road by which you reach Valvasor. I had no problems.
Second option is, from Hrašenska planina continue left where small house without roof. Bajta also visible from path, stands approx under Vajnež. From there nice path to Urbasa and Potoška. Good luck.

Thanks mili for the answer. It was definitely useful.
With husband we were around Stol. From top we continued under Potoški Stol, Vajnež, Belščica. Path supposedly goes down also somewhere there where path to Vajnež branches (that's what they told us), but we went further because path really beautiful. Above hut (somewhere saw called shepherd's hut) which you see we descended pastures, crossed bit back to small bivouac on Belščica, there found sign for Valvasor and arrived Urbasa.
But have to comment path to Stol from Zelenica direction. Wanted from Vrtača cross unmarked but well visible path over Vatelca to Stol. On scree bit further where path branches to Vrtača we turned because path on very steep part (really short but still) torn and didn't risk. Returned to junction Vrtača-Stol and continued on "upper path to Stol.
Also quite awkward descent due to scree in gully to krnica V Kožnah. Also on scree under Stol summit some spots unpleasant for some esp descent esp maybe for kids.
Walked this path few years ago remember as better maintained and equipped.
But Prešernova hut has excellent still those old real caretakers! Bravo!!!

Today to Stol from Ljubelj. In the morning there weren't many of us on the parking lot. I've been going to Zelenica since last year, when friendly Tržičans told me about the border path, always here. The hut on Zelenica is still resting a bit after six a.m. I start above the hut towards the path for Vrtača and Stol. After Rušje and then the scree I decide for the upper path. The only problem is that steep gully downhill, where you have to be careful about slipping. Last time I did this path five years ago and it charmed me again. On top of Stol cold and gale wind. At the hut around nine it shows two degrees. The caretaker says it was minus two when they got up. To the hut for hot tea, and I always write some postcard. Guests mainly Austrians. Then gloves and wind anorak on, to top of Stol, but we all quickly blown down. Back by lower path. Somehow worse trodden and really torn in places by storms, but has quite some springs. At saddle decide to visit dom at Završnica source and descend to it. There huge hustle. Then to Zelenica and car. On Zelenica large herd of horses. Haven't seen them here till now.
Hut at Zelenica. Then across the ski slope to the spruce grove and then along the path which almost horizontally bypasses the southern slopes of Vrtače, interrupted only by gullies and screes.1
Here towards Stol.2
Lower and upper path - poorly marked. I take the upper path, which Klemen Janša names so in the long-awaited PZS guidebook Karavanke published in 2010.3
A somewhat more difficult descent through a gravelly and rocky gully into the V Kožnah valley.4
This way. We are surrounded by the mighty rocky scenery of the Orlic, Orličja and Stol ridges.5
Large boulders along the path as we cross the Mel cirque, here the path from Celovška koča via Belščica saddle joins us, and earlier the lower path from below Šija saddle joined us.6
Over rocky terrain and scree fields.7
Just before the summit.8

Lower return path - there was something here. Soon we reach Šija saddle from where we descend to Smokuška planina.12

When our family heads to the mountains, it's quite hard to match the wishes and abilities of individual family members and choose a tour with which all would be satisfied. This time we chose the climbing path to Stol, which was a real challenge for the youngest, not yet ten-year-old son. We drove via Ljubelj to the Austrian side and parked at the parking lot under Celovška koča. Further traffic is allowed only for the chosen ones; by what we saw, there weren't few of them. We hiked to the entry into the climbing part of the path for about an hour. We put on SMV sets, donned helmets, and waited a bit, as a dad and his daughter were just entering the wall. Obviously, the initial almost vertical ascent on brackets, which is perhaps the hardest on the whole path, was too much for the girl, as she and her dad soon gave up and headed back down the scree. While observing the happenings ahead, my son's pants shook a bit too, but the desire was too strong for him to quit before the start. With some anger and a lot of will, he rushed after the older son up the densely placed brackets and almost easily overcame the first chimney. Full of enthusiasm over the initial success, then also in the continuation of the path, where easier and harder sections alternated, and occasionally some easier scrambling, he had no special problems. The path dragged the most for him in the upper easier part. On the top, with impaired views limited mainly to the Austrian side, we cheered a bit, refreshed ourselves, and then descended via the easier path to the east over the Belščica saddle and screes past Celovška koča back to the starting point.
Thus, we nicely used the last day of my mainly mountaineering vacation.

"How I always enjoy looking at your albums," my friend Anica tells me, "I would really like to experience that once with younasmeh". And despite not yet having stepped into the embrace of our beautiful mountains, we decide to take her to Stol. We started our path in the Završnica valley, past Valvazorjev dom via Žirovska to the top and Zabreška back to the valley. On the way to the saddle we decide not to climb to the saddle but turn left to the ridge to the place where the climbing path from Austria joins, past the cross to the top. From the top descent to Prešernova koča, where we treated ourselves to real martinčkanje in the warm sun and did the obligatory baptism of friend Anica, as she climbed the highest peak of the Karavanke jezik. We had a wonderful dayvelik nasmeh.

...Very cold morning, especially towards the hut already real winter. Goodbye summer clothes. Icy snow on parts of the path, which doesn't cause major problems, except on descent to the saddle between Little and Big Stol. There more caution needed, or small crampons. Pleasant at the top, even the wind forgot to blow. Ridge path to Potoški Stol and then past "Betonska" nice, no issues. Very few hikers, super daynasmeh

On Saturday 29.9.2012 we headed to Stol via the climbing path from Austria. Part of the climbing path is very nice, well protected, entry quite adrenaline-filled.

We returned via the path past Celoška hut. No snow on any part of the path.

Prešeren hut on Stol was already closed, Celovška hut still open.

Pictures from the hike can be seen on the website of Mountaineering Association Matica Murska Sobota: http://www.mojalbum.com/pdmaticams/20120929-stol-po-plezalni/foto/20111684

Yes, the climbing wall is really super and worth trying. But it's nice if the wall is dry, as it was wet from rain and fog when we went, consequently the boots didn't grip as they could have.

Weather really wasn't ideal and we were a bit worried before entering the climbing section whether we'd continue the path to the top at all, as it started drizzling. But desire prevailed and we conquered Stol. No views at the top, plus strong wind, so we just signed the book, took photos, and quickly sought shelter :p

We hope next time the weather will be nicer velik nasmeh
