Can't bypass it. It wouldn't be quite right to claim that winter gear on steep snowfields isn't needed..
Todi's pictures aren't from this path.

I was on Stol last Sunday. In the saddle between Prešeren hut and Stol summit there's some snow, passable without winter gear! Really can't bypass it but no need either, it goes nicely over without anything. Different if planning via gully to the saddle on Stol summit.

Can already go up in low hiking shoes or is there still too much snow?

Via Žirovnica past the hut to the top, yes, although I still advocate high hiking boots, everyone decides for themselves.

Today: all paths to the summit are clear of snow, including the climbing one.

About two years have passed since the guide "55 Insured Climbing Paths" mysteriously disappeared from my shelf. In the end I found out that our "little one" took it, saying she'll choose where we go next to the mountains nasmeh. She has her own "criteria"... access to the secured part at most an hour, and the secured part must be more than half the path... and more. And the secured path to Stol obviously satisfied all her "strict" criteria and from then on it was only: "Let's go to Stol via ferrata!". And again: "Why not go to Stol via ferrata?" And third: "When will we finally go to Stol via ferrata?". She wouldn't give up, and we finally went yesterday (4.7.)... :)

It was nice. Workout not just for legs, also a bit for arms... The initial part is really a bit steep, but excellently secured, so no worries. The forecasters finally predicted correctly once. Weather served excellently, wind kept it from being hot and views were excellent for this time. Only the first part of descent to Celovska hut we put on "delete" and will easily forget that scree, everything else super... nasmeh

Regarding the mentioned scree on descent, I'm more worried who will clean my shoes now, hehe.

Otherwise, today first time on both paths for me too. On the ascent I managed to stray once and unnecessarily free-climbed less than 10m of exposed scree (directly below the first wooden ladder), otherwise no problems. Self-belaying fully recommended, although most others except me were without.
Big danger is falling rocks (very easy to trigger, and they rumble down nearby gullies by themselves all the time).
Weather almost dreamy, views still decent, big crowd, radler at Celovska hut extremely good.

@SunBurned, we cleaned our shoes on some snow patches that followed... mežikanjenasmeh

Otherwise, that you managed to stray is probably because you were extremely fast, it didn't happen to us...mežikanjenasmeh

We also heard rumbling of falling rocks nearby and were very glad that there wasn't much traffic yesterday at least on "our" path...nasmeh

Gita, I absolutely wasn't extremely fast, maybe a bit too much observing the surroundings, girls, etc. nasmeh

On 2.7. my boyfriend and I went to Stol (from home to Zelenica), upper path... past Vrtace, then descent, walking on rocks, a bit of snow, but nothing that couldn't be passed. A steep ascent followed under Orlice (the sound of a rock was also heard... luckily we were about 5m away). The path under Orlice was more demanding (at least for me).

Stol on Friday from the Carinthian side to the summit. Medvedji dol-climbing path-Stol-Mali Stol-Belščica saddle-Svačica-Belščica saddle-Celovška hut-Medvedji dol. Road to Barental nicely arranged and leveled. Climbing path offers wonderful views, protections impeccable, some small fallen trees and some snow patches that don't hinder ascent, path was clear and dry. At summit quite strong wind, views unique all the way to Pohorje. Snack at Prešeren hut, then down the scree to Belščica saddle and obligatory jump to Svačica. On scree there are still 3-4 snow patches, one in upper part a bit unpleasant and I bypassed it directly down the scree, below no problems as it's trampled and snow is melting. Very nice day and very nice tour that always excites me again.

Hello,
I would ask for advice, namely do you recommend visiting high mountains this Sunday? I have Grintovec or Stol in mind. Asking from safety perspective.
Thanks and best regards.

Blaž, bad weather with thunderstorms is forecast for Sunday and in such weather don't go to the mountains, even in the valley lightning can surprise you.
Good luck!

If Blaž is able to post a question on this portal,
then it probably won't be too hard for him to check the weather forecast for the planned day!
