Today early morning from the Austrian side via climbing path to Stol. Path nicely arranged, no problems, super views at the top over 2000m/nm, down express via scree to starting point. At the top sunny, almost no wind, plenty of visitors from both our and Austrian side.

3rd picture really nice. Today in Karavanke above 1950m like fairy tale (was on Vrtača).

Thanks for the praises and ratings of the pics.
since I was in a hurry to work yesterday, today I'm adding a few more photos and can only add this: after 3 hours of sleep I barely got up from the warm bed, at the top it was all more than rewarded. Weather and views like this you don't catch every day.

Nice pictures by tomko. Also to me, like to janez.novak, picture 3 from the first pack of pics was great.
With some guessing the sharp ridge of Košuta revealed itself. On pic 2 from the second pack of pics a ridge in the distance. Peca? Yes, because I took a pic from its summit towards Stol and Triglav some time ago. Košuta is of course on the left on my pic.

Early morning still in the dark from Tinčkova hut (or from jagrskh bajt if you're into local) through Zagon to saddle Belščica. Planned stop we postponed due to fog to higher level and it paid off. Just below the summit of Eastern Jelenček it opened up, breathtaking. Seas all around, individual islands slowly emerging from clouds; first Vrtača island stood up eerily vertical, then others.
And the real thing began. Descent to Western Jelenček soon showed teeth, so we roped up. Exposed traverse down under the ridge tower is so brilliantly equipped I've never seen similar pitch. Wedge every 2 meters, though terrain not much harder than II. Rope useful also on annoying crumbly passage over clogged gully – crumbly scree even Martuljek wouldn't be ashamed of. Descent from Western Jelenček to Celovška notch not too demanding, but requires care in steep scree.
Ascent to Celovška spica pleasant, best due to ingenious passage through notch to north side right under summit. Views over wall to bottom definitely not for vertigo. At summit no peg for rope descent to continue ridge, so we chose exposed but not too hard descent more on south side. Ridge to Krkotnik is interesting alright! Made of countless huge rock blocks lying across the ridge line like logs. To stay on ridge as much as possible, can't avoid short rope descent (at least for me), but can do easier bypass on south side. Krkotnik offers somewhat easier ridge descent to Stolova notch, from where finale follows.
Ascent to Stol nicely spiced with easy ridge scrambling on solid rock, real shame to miss it even if some descriptions of mentioned tour don't foresee it. Final chords of this nice traverse end on soft grasses; who doesn't want hustle right on top, enjoy tour end here a few meters lower.

For a change one selfie from the top.

Path icy in places. Small crampons come in handy (if you're early). If I had ice axe, I would probably descend the gully to Prižnica. Snow in gully quite hard. Road to Valvazorja OK.

Hello,

on Saturday I'd like to climb Stol from Valvasorjev dom. Are crampons and ice axe needed? Given the sunny forecast for Thu, Fri, Sat, probably quite a bit of southern snow?

Thanks lp

Icier on the southern slopes than southwards, as nights in high mountains will be well below zero. Crampons, ice axe and helmet are always mandatory winter gear, as well as avalanche triplet.

Is it trodden? Has anyone been up there today or yesterday?

Završnica-Stol. At "klopce" put on crampons and gaiters. To junction Prešeren hut-saddle path just trodden enough no orientation problems. From saddle to top not trodden yet, no major walking issues, just sinks in places. Snow mostly not frozen anywhere and doesn't hold human weight.

Morning on Stol via Žirovnica path. According to forecasts last day before clouding and weather worsening, excellent on Stol. Views far around, clear sky, just windy at top. Path trodden, from Valvasor to Prižnica icy on sections, higher snow thickens but due to frost and wind-blown snow doesn't sink. More in photos.
