Today on Stol via Žirovniška path. To the chapel dry, then mixed... dry, snow. Out of scrub completely dry to Prešeren hut. From there to top still lots of snow. Descent via gully between Stols to chapel (super snow for descent). Could ski here nasmeh. At 10:10 thunder in Julian Alps. Very few visitors today.

Today circular route: Valvazor - Zabreška - Stol - Žirovniška - Valvazor. Conditions OK. I recommend this circular route these days, as on descent I walked on snow up to cca 1750 m (a bit above Prižnica). So the descent is very fast.

Janez, thanks for the info. I was also thinking of going up Zabreška and down Žirovniška. If the weather is like this till Saturday, it will be more snow-free.

This variant is pleasant for the next few days.

I'll consider it. The Prešeren hut opens the second weekend; then it will be even better for a multi-day trip, as one can overnight. Just that the weather has finally turned summery.

Snow is only still on the path from the Prešeren hut to the summit (approach from Valvazor). Winter gear is not needed.

For those patches, ice axe is mandatory, because you can slip and slide down the scree; on the pic I see, it's not exactly useless to take at least an ice axe

The snow is so mushy it sinks to your knees. Where are you going to slip and where will you stick the ice axe?

Today I was with my girlfriend on Stol. Up the Žirovnica path, down the Zagreb path making a nice loop. In the gully between the two Stols quite some snow, but it's southern and can be bypassed with some skill. The day was perfect for visiting the king of Karavanke, wonderful views and accordingly quite a few hikers. nasmehmežikanje But I'd warn that the macadam to Valvasor hut is in very poor condition in places, so if you don't have an off-roader go slowly so you don't damage your steel horses zmedenzadrega. Today, halfway through the program, it was Stol's turn.
Start at the lake in Završnica, past Valvasor hut then directly up Žirovska path to Stol. On the way back also to Prešeren hut, which opened its doors yesterday so now you can refresh there too. Path without issues, we were lucky the weather forecast didn't hold, otherwise we'd be "stewing" in the sun.

Some pics attached, for a longer description of today's hike to Stol (and video) see >>HERE<<

Hi

We were up there yesterday via Žirovnica path. In the gully still some snow, but if you go past Prešeren hut you bypass it.

Down went faster and soon we were in Bled. velik nasmeh
