On Tuesday: the gully is fully iced over. The snow doesn't sink in the gully, but below, above the hut, it occasionally collapses. It's smart to start early to reach the hut before the sun hits. Also for descent, the central route is a better choice than Šentanc, where it constantly sinks to the knees.

Thanks for the reply. I think there's no big difference, time up or down, since the gully is shaded in the morning anyway, and night temps are not substantially lower than morning ones. nasmeh

On Monday conditions were excellent in Central, which I descended.... In Lenuhova it sank much more in the upper part and was windcrusted. Recommended early hour: at 7am 3°C, at 9am already 11°C... big difference mežikanje

here the days are slowly coming to an end

also good conditions in Lenuhova in between

modest snow conditions with beautiful views

The central gully still nicely filled...a bit of stones here and there

Today on Begunjščica via the central route. Since we started very early (from home at 5 a.m., from the car at 6:30), conditions in the gully were super for both ascent and descent.

Today up Ipsilon, descent via Šentanc.
Conditions fantastic. nasmeh

In Ipsilon hard frozen snow almost to the exit. Wind crust there, gone in a day or two at the right exit. zadrega

Conditions in Šentanc super too. Hard snow that holds a person... descent as one could only wish for. mežikanje

Begunjščica - conditions 1.4.2017

classic north approaches: up Central down Šentanc - still pleasant

From past webcam views from Triangel (Zg.Plota) snow conditions still looked good, so the only dilemma was whether to take/carry skis or not, as continuous snow starts only at the second bend of the service road above Vrtača hut or at the end of Šentanski plaz.

To prevent the snow at the start of the Central gully approach from sinking too much, start really early in the morning; from the middle of the scree field onwards it's fully hard. There aren't many kicked steps in the snow and they aren't deep enough to ascend without crampons; from the narrows or summer jump onwards, the last part also requires a good ice axe. The upper exit where the sun hits the gully is already softened, so caution recommended for those descending too.
On Saturday several rocks flew across the gully, probably triggered by wind, so warning to all on such tours about special danger of flying rocks.

Šentanski plaz is ~120 m steep from the ridge top, then still nicely filled, offering great ski descent around 12:00; on foot comfortable, almost no sinking to the end.

Today conditions very good in Central gully, just a bit below summit dry, where I went a bit more left and practically to the top had good ice for piking. On ridge almost no wind, a bit at times, otherwise fantastic conditions. Descent same via Central, ...

Already on road, lost gloves somewhere, Jack Wolfskin if anyone finds them by chance.

Nice weather used for the ascent to Begunjščica. Start and end of the hike at Ljubelj, otherwise via Zelenica, summit, Roblek, Preval and through tunnels to the starting point.
The whole path without peculiarities, lots of hikers, shorts and sunscreen recommended zadrega

, on Preval already grazing livestock. In short, nice and a shame to stay home.

My tour yesterday was almost the same. Start at Ljubelj via Born tunnels to Preval alpine pasture. Then via Roža to Roblek hut. From there to Begunjščica ridge to its highest peak - Veliki vrh - 2060m. Shame there was fog and no views. Back to Zelenica. On the descent it had already cleared.

We were enough for a whole bus up to Roblek.

Born's tunnels are always a unique experience.

Planšarija at Preval alpine pasture - they have good sour milk.

Manganese mine. There were three in the Begunjščica area. They stopped mining already in the 19th century.

In the fog, then I am on Veliki vrh of the Begunjščica ridge.

It will soon be necessary to renovate this path.

Up there I wasn't alone. Up there were young Croats - first time at 2000 meters.

Ljubelj, Zelenica, Roblek hut, Veliki vrh, Preval and through Born tunnel back to Ljubelj. From Zelenica to junction to Roblek lots of snow patches and huge collapses. Other side south snow and mud. Upper part of the calvary more like a stream than a trail, snow melting fast. Quite a few of us on summit, not to mention the buzz on Preval. Weather nice, warm, almost no wind and good views. Also met 2 Šmarna gora visitors at Roblek nasmeh
